Originally released on Capitol (11278). Includes liner notes by Steve Roeser.
After racking up their biggest success to date with We're an American Band, Grand Funk Railroad decided to keep a good thing going by retaining Todd Rundgren as their producer and continuing to push their sound in a pop/rock direction. The end result has its moments but is not as strong as We're an American Band. Although the songs are tight and benefit from a strong performance by the group, the material simply isn't as inspired this time out: songs like "Please Me" and "Getting Over You" are energetic but lack the infectious hooks and clever arrangement touches that would make them stick in the listener's memory. Shinin' On's best songs are the ones that became its single releases: the title track infuses its hard-driving, spacy rock groove with some surprisingly ethereal vocal harmonies and the cover of "The Loco Motion" turns this dance classic on its ear with a stomping beat and a screeching guitar lead from Mark Farner. Other tracks make up for their lack of hooks by experimenting with the group's sound in interesting ways: "Mr. Pretty Boy" is a creepy slow blues that features an atmospheric Mellotron backing and "To Get Back In" is a full-fledged soul song built on thick combination of organ and horns. In the end, Shinin' On is too unfocused and uneven to win over non-fans but Grand Funk Railroad fans will find plenty to enjoy on this album. ~ Donald A. Guarisco

Another great Todd production A great blend of pop and classic rock with heavy bass lines Submitted by a reviewer (Raleigh,NC,USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A Big Letdown! After the unprecedented success of "We're An American Band," "Shining On" was a big letdown. Here the songs were so lackluster that Grand Funk resorted to a last minute cover of the bubblegum song "Locomotion," which produced their second #1 single but tarnished their reputation among hardrock fans. Mark Farner continued his decline as a song writer and Don Brewer tried to pick up the slack with good-but-not great songs. Todd Rundgren's production was also several notches below his earlier work with the band. Submitted by a reviewer (Detroit, Michigan, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A great hard rock album Shinin On is a great hard rock album, This is from the We're An American band period where Don Brewer, Grand Funk's Great Drummer, steps up with his song writing and lead singing (on songs such as Shinin On, Please Me, Getting Over you, Carry Me through). And GFR rocks hard on Please Me, Getting Over you, Carry Me through, and Shinin On. The song Destitute N Losin (the B side from Locomotion) is included on this one, and it is a great Mark Farner song. To Get Back in is a good song. Locomotion the number 1 hit from this album, was a big hit for GFR, but kind of hurt the band in that people starting thinking of GFR as a pop band, that must produce hits; and many of the hard core hard rock GFR fans, were disappointed that GFR covered that song, and felt they were selling out for radio play. I personally always liked the song and I love Mark Farner's great Guitar solo in that one. Mr. Pretty Boy is a strange song (no drums) that really does not fit on this hard rock album. BUT over all Shinin On is Pure Grand Funk, and Pure Hard Rock; Don Brewer, Mark Farner, Mel Schacher and Craig Frost rock hard on shinin on. This CD is 24 bit remasterred and has two bonus tracks Destitute and losin, which I mention above, and an alternative version of Shinin on, both are great numbers. The CD sounds great, it also has new liner notes, which are excellent, and very nice artwork. It is a must get for every GFR fan. Submitted by RickDC (Moodus, CT.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Shinin' On music CDs
$8.09 Having scored four consecutive Top Ten albums in the previous two years, Grand Funk Railroad may not have seemed to casual observers like a band who needed to rise phoenix-like from the ashes, but the title of the band's seventh album referred to its re-emergence after a litigious split from manager/producer Terry Knight. Now, they were producing themselves, and they added organist Craig Frost, credited here as a sideman, though he went on to join the band formally. The biggest change, however, was a musical maturity. After releasing five studio albums in a little ...

Shinin' On songs
$9.45 By the time Grand Funk Railroad came to make Survival in January 1971, Cleveland Recording had moved to new quarters, and the group had become a national phenomenon, its last two albums Top Ten million-sellers. They spent a relatively luxurious six weeks or so on the record, and the results showed; Survival was the best-sounding and the best-played album they had yet made. Such assessments are, of course, relative, however. The group's playing remained ...
