(1 Customer Review)
This compilation from Metropolis Records will give listeners a glimpse into the history and development of Ben Watkins's music. Watkins has broadened his scope since 2002 to incorporate a myriad of styles into his work. However, this 10-year retrospective focuses on Watkins's seminal recordings, many of which fall neatly into a techno vein.
All 11 selections on ODYSSEY 1992-2002 could be best described as hard-hitting dance tracks. The throbbing, synthetic rhythms of "High Energy Protons" and "Laughing Gas" best epitomize Watkins's earliest recordings. On these tracks, quarter notes pound in the foreground, while spacey keyboard effects swirl and pulsate in the distance. The rock influenced "Masters of the Universe" and the spooky choral arrangement "Hotaka" illustrate Watkins's later recordings, which are more diverse. In general, there is an indefinable mystique to each of these dance tracks. In addition to the use of atmospheric keyboard effects, Watkins employs a rich tapestry of rhythmical colors throughout. On this collection, listeners will not hear "songs" per se, but rather, a series of compelling, often sultry, post-modern grooves.
A best of collection form this trance, techno, industrial, pop, dance, world band. Many tracks highlight some of the most innovative collaborators the Juno Reactor has ever worked with, Alex Patterson (Orb), Greg Hunter (ex-Orb), Stef Holweck, Mike Maguire, Steve Stevens (Billy Idol), Amampondo, Nick Burton, Phil Jackson, & Johann Bley. 11 tracks including the single, 'Hotaka'. Digipak. Metropolis. 2003.
Additional personnel includes: Alex Patterson, Greg Hunter, Stef Holweck, Steve Stevens, Amampando, Nick Burton, Phil Jackson, Johann Bley.

Odyssey 1992-2002
$14.49 Unfortunately for their fans, the Innocence Mission albums are few and far between. After the critically acclaimed 1995 album Glow, there was a four-year hiatus and a label switch before Birds of My Neighborhood. The band was composing a number of songs during that period, however, and Small Planes issues some of the ones that had been left behind. Albums of this sort are often full of juvenalia and throwaways, but this collection of unreleased songs is as good as many bands' major works. Karen Peris' voice is as ethereal as ever, and the stripped-down, hypnotic accompaniment conspires to create an introspective mood. Songs like "Migration" document the melancholy, depressive feelings that the Peris had when ...

Odyssey 1992-2002
$10.59 Collectables Fun With the 'Ol Professor '44-'47 collects various tracks recorded by swing bandleader Kay Kyser during the latter stage of his career. Kyser's band grew from a likeable if lightweight cornball dance band into a solid and respected swing ensemble. By the late '40s Kyser had let some hardcore jazz improvisation filter into his sound which began to reflect the more adventurous Bebop-style.There are a few hits included here, but mostly these are lesser known b-sides. As such, collectors searching ...
| | Rhett Y Los Borrachos Empenados Entre Dios Y El Diablo CD (2005)
Odyssey 1992-2002
$11.49 Rhett y Los Borrachos Empeñados is a group of young, affable, like-minded Cuban-American rock musicians from Miami. The band, which has been writing, recording and performing collectively for about 6 years, is also known as Rhett and the Pawn Shop Drunks. Building on the momentum achieved with countless local live shows, including their monthly American Spic Fest @ Tobacco Road, an extended residency @ Hoy Como Ayer (Little Havana) and several out of town showcases (New York's, Acme Underground and Arlene's Grocery and Boston's Harper's Ferry), the band has now come into its own - in two languages. With a growing catalog of songs from their previous releases (2001's "All the Things We Couldn't Say" and 2003's "God Lost Faith" and their third installment, "American Spic Sessions, Vol. 1" 2004), Rhett y L.B.E. are quickly making a name for themselves, breaking through the mold of what Miami rock bands are typically perceived to be. Afforded the chance to appear on 98.3 FM's “Fuego Rock†radio program and showcase before a packed house of music industry insiders @ Hoy Como Ayer in late summer 2004, the band decided to pen some tunes in the language native to their parents: Spanish. Recorded, mixed and mastered between October of 2004 and March 2005, the band's debut bowed on June 28th, 2005. "Entre Dios y el Diablo" features the first single and video "El Negro y las Balsa (si nos coje Fidel)". This lively and unconventional tune playfully entones the struggles of yesterday and today's Cuban national. Under the direction of Franco Parente and John Doe Entertainment, the band filmed a promo clip for the song @ various Miami locations in March of 2005. Visually, it is a visitation to a late 1950's street party where ...
