For over three decades, Carlos Barbosa-Lima has been regarded as one of the most creative acoustic guitarists on the world stage. Since his U.S. debut in 1967, he has enjoyed a global concert career. This new Khaeon release is his second on the label. Hi
Brazilian guitarist Carlos Barbosa-Lima injects his personalized style into various musical elements. The sounds of Brazil and the Latin genre are performed on this fine 2003 release. Simply put, Barbosa-Lima is a masterful acoustic guitarist who tends to speak softly via his instrument of choice. Throughout these 16 pieces, the artist garners sympathetic support from bassist John Benitez, percussionist Edgardo Aponte, and cuattro (Puerto Rican stringed instrument) performer Gustavo Colina. The guitarist's deft plucking and classically oriented articulations speak volumes here. It's all about finesse, multi-hued textures, and rhythmically charged chord progressions, whether performing within bossa nova-style frameworks or rendering a simpatico version of the Webber/Rose classic "Don't Cry for Me Argentina." Barbosa-Lima is a stylist who doesn't overwhelm with brazen pyrotechnics or rapid-fire bravado. He simply gets the job done by way of his finely honed technical veracity and acute comprehension of the material at hand. Hence, Barbosa-Lima's methodology broadcasts a quiet fire brimming with sentiment and emotive qualities. ~ Glenn Astarita
Personnel includes: Carlos Barbosa-Lima (acoustic guitar); Gustavo Colina (cuatro); John Benitez (bass); Edgardo Aponte (percussion).

| | Dar Williams Honesty Room CD (1993)
Natalia
$15.65 Upon the release of this debut album, Massachusetts native Dar Williams quickly won comparisons to Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell. Such assessments are complimentary, but Williams doesn't take herself quite as seriously as those seminal soprano folksingers. Williams has a wicked sense of humor. She delivers her witty story-songs in a conversational manner, accompanying her clear, high voice with clean acoustic guitar. Sisters Katryna and Nerissa Nields provide backup ...

| | Tony Bennett Complete Improv Recordings CDs (2004) Remastered; Box Set
Natalia
$25.89 For those new to the music of Tony Bennett, Improv was a label started by Tony Bennett and businessman Bill Hassett. Bennett was fed up with the suits at Columbia Records, who were trying to make him sing rock & roll. When his contract expired at the beginning of the 1970s, he and Hassett formed a label to help him realize his aesthetic ambitions, and Improv was born. Bennett recorded five albums for the label between 1975 and 1977 before it went bankrupt. These recordings may not have sold well -- due largely to distribution problems -- but all of them were critically ...

| | Al Thompson, JR City Mainstream CD (2007)
Natalia
$14.19 Al Thompson Jr’s compositions cover myriad of jazz styles, as evidenced by his wide variety of influences. Al cites such diverse musical personalities as Scott Joplin, Horace Silver, Miles Davis, and Claude Debussy as major influences in his playing and compositions. Al also spent some time studying with the great jazz composer/arranger Bill Finegan, who told Al, when looking over “City Mainstream,” to “go write twelve more like it.” Fortunately for us, Al took Bill’s advice to heart and thus represented here on this release are nine compositions along with contributions by his friend (his “Strayhorn”) co-composer Calvin Thomas. As the arranger on this project, it is a pleasure to work with an old friend, be free to arrange such wonderful and challenging music and to work with the many talented musicians represented here on this recording. One need only listen to the “other-worldly” tune “The Chase” followed by the “film noir-esque” romantic “Memories Of A Moonlit Night” to marvel at and appreciate the diversity of Al’s musical mind. “City Mainstream” is ...
