| | Chet Baker But Not For Me CD Chet Baker Discography of CDs
BUT NOT FOR ME includes six previously unreleased performances from 1982.
This 1994 CD, released some six years following the death of Chet Baker, is a major addition to his discography. The trumpeter, who seemed to go into the studio almost obsessively during the last dozen years of his life, is heard in what seems to be a well thought out session with an impressive cast. The rhythm section of Kenny Barron, Charlie Haden, and Ben Riley ranks as one of the best that ever accompanied Baker, resulting in some very inspired playing all around. Flautist James Newton is added for the gorgeous "Lament" (a reworking of the old spiritual "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child" and not the J. J. Johnson composition of the same name). The imaginative take of Miles Davis' "Four" begins with just Haden accompanying Baker's vocal, before tuba player Howard Johnson takes Baker's place, with the leader eventually adding his trumpet to what finally becomes a trio. Johnson's tuba also makes an interesting substitute for Gerry Mulligan's baritone sax in the original recording of "Line for Lyons," though it's impossible for him to achieve the lyricism of its composer in his famous recording; Barron also sits out this number. Baker takes to Haden's moody "Ellen David" like it was a part of his regular repertoire. A snappy arrangement of Gershwin's "But Not for Me" is followed by the intriguing "Prayer for the Newborn," a fairly modern ballad penned by Dennis Luxion. It's a shame that Barron and Haden didn't have more opportunities to record with Chet Baker, as the results within this release show a considerable chemistry between them. Out of print since the demise of Stash in the mid-1990s, this very unusual session is worth the intense search likely required to obtain it. ~ Ken Dryden
This 1982 studio recording of Chet Baker was not released until Stash Records issued it in 1994 (the album has been out of circulation for several years). It's a very high quality production of Baker with an unusual lineup of fine sidemen: Kenny Barron o

But Not For Me music CDs
$13.79 This Philadelphia band's name, Boris Garcia, references Jerry Garcia, and while it is not specifically a Grateful Dead tribute project, its music is very much in the style of one of the Dead's manifestations, the bluegrass-leaning folk-rock unveiled on Workingman's Dead and American Beauty that was carried forward by spin-off group the New Riders of the Purple Sage. This was one of the Dead's most popular phases, and it was rooted genuinely in Garcia's early love of bluegrass, which he continued to pursue in such other spin-offs as Old & in the Way. Boris Garcia formed on a whim for the purpose of recording its debut album, Boris Garcia's Family Reunion, but a year later the band has played out quite a lot and become a more cohesive unit as a result. There are three singer/songwriters in the group, Bob Stirner, Jeff Otto, and Gene Smith, and while all of the music, with its acoustic guitar/mandolin interplay and galloping rhythm section, recalls the Workingman's Dead sound, when Otto comes to the microphone for his songs "Other Shoe," "Nine Fine Wines," "Neverland," and "She's No Happier" he sings in a light tenor that unmistakably recalls Jerry Garcia, making the Grateful Dead connection even more explicit. The longest song, "Change of Heart," just touches the five-minute mark, so the jamming is held in check for the most part, the better to emphasize the songs and their lyrics, which concern the ups and downs of love, but also have a distinctly ...
