El Ejemplo songs
$11.05 JEFE DE JEFES was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Mexican-American/Tejano Music Performance.
When norteño fans are attempting to explain the polka-influenced style to those who know little or nothing about regional Mexican music, they compare it to everything from country to gangsta rap. The country comparison is made because of all the songs about heartache, loneliness, infidelity, and romantic disillusionment; the gangsta rap comparison is inspired by all the narco-corridos (corridos about drug trafficking) that los Tigres del Norte, Grupo Exterminador, the late Chalino Sanchez, and others are known for. And narco-corridos are a high priority on Jefe de Jefes (Boss of Bosses), which went down in history as one of the most essential Tigres albums of the '90s. This 1997 release (a two-CD set that sold over one million copies in the United States alone) was controversial; some Mexicans have accused narco-corridos of glorying the drug trade. But there is nothing on this album that paints drug trafficking in a favorable light -- quite the contrary. "Las Novias del Traficante," "El Dolor de un Padre," and other gems make it clear that los Tigres see drug trafficking for exactly what it is: a plague and a cancer. However, they aren't preachy or whiny about it; humor, in fact, is a prime ingredient on Jefe de Jefes, but the fact that los Tigres use humor to their artistic advantage doesn't mean that they're making light of a very serious and tragic problem. Not everything on Jefe de Jefes is about drug trafficking, ...

| | Marco Antonio Solis Tu Amor O Tu Desprecio CD (2003)
El Ejemplo CD music
$9.35 Ever since he started the legendary Mexican pop group Los Bukis in the '70s, singer/songwriter Marco Antonio Solis has been at the forefront of the Mexican music scene. His countless successful solo albums have made him a musical hearthrob on the order of Julio Iglesias, a romantic balladeer with passion (and songwriting skills) to burn. To his credit, Solis never takes it too far over the top, preferring to let his gorgeous voice lilt gently over the melody, expressing emotion without throwing it in your face. In this respect, one might compare him to a 21st century Freddy Fender, lending his lovely tones to heart-rending Mexican-tinged pop for maximum effect on TU AMOR O TU DESPRECIO.
TU AMOR O TU DESPRECIO includes a bonus poster.
Recorded at Watersound Studios, Studio City, California.
Personnel includes: Marco Antonia Solis (vocals, harmonica); Ramon ...

| | The Northern Souljers Meet Hi-Rhythm CD (2006)
El Ejemplo album
$14.69 How on earth are you gonna lose with a proposition like this? This platter matters! These 18 cuts represent Detroit soul in the Promised Land -- Memphis -- with the Hi Records rhythm section and of course their horn section too! Northern Souljers Meet Hi-Rhythm contains five Don Bryant cuts including "A Place in My Heart," his read of "Weak and Brokenhearted" (the other version of that nugget here is by the Master Keys), and the slow burner "Cloudy Days." There are a pair Fabulous Peps cuts, the butt funky "I Can't Get Right," and the smoking tough rhythm and soul of "So Fine." Add two Buddy Lamp tracks -- "You've Got the Lovin' Touch" and "Confusion" with a killer set of breakbeats -- and that's already half the disc! But there is so much more it sends the listener flip to wig city! Check out the Persians' take on "Talkin' About That Girl of Mine," with that boss guitar sound (Berry Gordy would never have let that kind of gloriously sweaty six-string vulgarity out of the Motown studio), and the Appreciations' "A Place in Your Heart," that cooks and choogles like the best of Hi and Stax without losing its Motown voice. While ...
