Jah Wobble had a lot of work under his belt by the time he recorded Fly, in styles ranging from post-punk to dub to new age instrumental. As such, trying to classify his body of work wouldn't just be difficult, it would be outright foolish, and Fly itself doesn't lend itself to easy classification any more than his output as a whole. Granted, a majority of the tracks here -- all titled "Fly" followed by the track number -- fit into the danceable world-tinged style that Wobble managed to bring to the charts more than a decade previously, on the Rising Above Bedlam album, but there's definitely more experimentation going on here than on that (admittedly commercial) release. There's a steady, if restrained, dub influence throughout, and a touch of jazz in places; even if these fit in nicely with the pan-cultural dance that fills out most of the rest of the album, Track Five -- consisting of atmospheric noises with a distorted speaking voice laid over top, bringing to mind early Cabaret Voltaire -- makes for a pretty jarring midpoint, and one that keeps the album from slotting in nicely beside either the more commercial Invaders of the Heart albums or the more overtly experimental releases. It does make for a very Jah Wobble album, however. ~ Sean Carruthers
2003 release available again from the former PiL member and leader of Invaders Of The Heart. This release takes Wobble's love of dance music in new, experimental directions tinged with Dub, Post-Punk and other styles that suite his fancy. Fly album
$22.10 This three-album retrospective of bassist Eberhard Weber's group, Colours, recorded between 1975 and 1980, is striking musically, historically, culturally, and creatively. As American and British jazz musicians were employing electric instruments to create edgier, funkier, and more stridently knotty music, many Northern Europeans were exploring an entirely different sonic universe: creating another pathway in jazz. Weber's work would help to define the ECM imprint's sound. Weber founded Colours in 1974 with saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist Charlie Mariano, keyboardist Rainer Bruninghaus, and drummer Jon Christensen -- to be replaced in by John Marshall in 1977. Its 1975 debut, Yellow Fields, put painterly touches into a sonic kaleidescope that explored tonal and harmonic realms with acute compositional and improvisational attention to the space that surrounded jazz. No matter how complex -- as on "Sand-Glass" -- it remains crystalline, warm, and engaging. 1977's Silent Feet is the group's greatest moment. They gelled on these three Weber-composed pieces in a manner that seems truly telepathic. Compositions like "Seriously Deep" are harmonically labyrinthine, but they engage improvisation within each tune's architectural framework. Weber's bass solo is among the most beautiful ...
| | Allen Toussaint Bright Mississippi CD (2009)
Fly CD music
$15.79 Fans of legendary New Orleans musician Allen Toussaint may at first be surprised that, for his first album in over a decade, the producer, songwriter, and pianist would choose to forgo recording his own stellar material in favor of a collection of cover tunes. The songs here aren't just any songs, however, but a rich selection of Big Easy standards, as interpreted by one of the city's most gifted musical sons. The resulting Joe Henry-produced gumbo draws upon all of Toussaint's myriad musical experiences, but often focuses on his incredibly soulful piano playing. Even when other instruments take the lead (the trumpet on "A Dear Old Southland," the clarinet on "Just a Closer Walk With Thee") it's the master's sublimely sensitive ivory ...

Fly music CDs
$12.89 Vijay Iyer has captured the ears of critics and listeners like only a handful of the most elite jazz pianists since McCoy Tyner, Cecil Taylor, or Misha Mengelberg initially burst onto the scene. There's no other single player who sounds even remotely like him, few who can match his ...

| | Dave Koz Greatest Hits CD (2008)
Fly album
$12.29 As radio show host, live performer, and studio musician, saxophonist Dave Koz has proven himself as one of the most enduring stars of the smooth jazz scene. His bright, lithe tone is equally adaptable to settings funky, dramatic, and mellow. GREATEST HITS provides not only a fine, balanced overview but includes four brand-new songs as well. HITS also features collaborations with similarly inclined musicians, including trumpeter Chris Botti, gospel/R&B vocalist BeBe Winans, and the late soul icon Luther Vandross. For those new to Koz, this set provides a fabulous cross-section of his career, and for fans, there are those four tracks exclusive to this collection.

| | Chuck Mangione An Evening Of Magic, Live At The Hollywood Bowl CDs (1978)
Fly CD music
$11.99 Recorded live at the Hollywood Bowl, Los Angeles, California on July 17, 1978. Includes liner notes by Chuck Cassell.
All track have been digitally remastered.
Recorded at the height of Chuck Mangione's fame when "Feels So Good" was still busting up the charts, this double-LP set attempts to recapture the dynamism of his earlier live albums but falls short on a few counts. For one thing, the sound gives the listener no idea of what it was like to be in the audience that evening; there are only fleeting traces of the live presence and electricity of the event in this tightly mic'ed recording. For another, the sense of fresh discovery of a new voice in the Mercury sets is replaced by a mostly self-congratulatory round of reprises from earlier albums, centered in the jazz-funk idiom of Mangione's then-current quintet (the funkified "Hill Where the Lord Hides" in particular lacks the majesty and tension of the original live version). Mangione and his sidemen (Chris Vadala, winds; Grant Geissman, guitars; Charles Meeks, bass; James Bradley, Jr., drums) are sufficiently pumped up and energetic, sometimes outdoing the studio performances of the material, and there is a 70-piece orchestra of L.A. musicians who mostly form part of the scenery. The only "new" stuff (as of July 1978) is a set of excerpts from the film score to Children of Sanchez -- a heavily truncated ...
| | Diana, Princess Of Wales: Tribute CDs (1997)
Fly music CDs
$16.15 Proceeds from the sale of DIANA PRINCESS OF WALES TRIBUTE will go to benefit the charitable trust fund created in her memory.
Benefiting the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund, this double CD brings together some of the biggest names in several genres of music, from R.E.M to Aretha Franklin to Placido Domingo, who dedicate both well-known and brand new material to the memory of the Princess. Included among the classic pop hits are Eric Clapton's "Tears in Heaven," Bruce Springsteen's "Streets of Philadelphia," and Diana Ross's "Missing You," all touching, melancholy ballads which underscore the tragedy of Diana's death and the depth of the loss felt by those who mourn. Some of the songs written especially for the album include Peter Gabriel's spare "In The Sun," Sinead O'Connor's soulful version of the hymn played at Diana's funeral, "Make Me A Channel of Your Peace," and a moving remake of the Eurythmics' "Angel" by Annie Lennox. A moment of uplift is provided by the Pretenders' hopeful "Hymn to Her:" "She will always carry on/Something is lost, but something is found/They will keep on speaking her name/Some things change, some stay the same."

| | Ultra-Lounge, Vol. 8: Cocktail Capers CD (1996)
Fly songs
$9.29 Recorded between February 23, 1951 and April 13, 1967. Includes liner notes by RJ Smith.
Digitally remastered by Bob Norberg at Capitol Recording Studios, Hollywood, California.
If you've been following the Ultra-Lounge series this far, you know what to expect: a mixture of stars (Les Baxter, Nelson Riddle) and no-names from the Capitol vaults, playing space age pop/cocktail music of all hues in the 1950s and 1960s. Yet this has an edge over most of the previous titles in the series: there's more of a sense of swing, groove, even (dare we say) danger on much of this, albeit danger of a very safe sort. Hints of rock'n'roll and spy music even creep in from time to time, with James Bond-type reverb guitar decorating cuts like Al Caiola's "Underwater Chase," and top rock & roll session drummer Earl Palmer getting into ...
| | Jack Nitzsche Lonely Surfer CD (1963)
Fly album
$11.39 Jack Nitzsche had one brush with greatness early in his career, apart from his job as Phil Spector's arranger -- "The Lonely Surfer," a classic of the surf music genre. This album attempted to extend his solo career beyond that of a one-hit wonder, with mixed success. The best cuts are songs that are in the same surfer mold: "Puerto Vallarta," "Baja," and "Beyond the Surf." Nitzsche had a gift for melodramatic, ascending arrangements that rose to dramatic crescendos, underpinned by rumbling basslines and clanging percussion. Less successful are a super-slow take on "Da Doo Ron Ron" and remakes of easy listening and soundtrack hits such as "Ebb Tide" and "More," which are given a precious sheen of strings. The ...
| | Ben Arnold Calico CD (2004)
Fly CD music
$12.95 Ever since the success of Bob Dylan in the mid-'60s transformed the notion of what constitutes a good, or even acceptable, singing voice for a recording artist, the term "singer/songwriter" has referred to someone whose superior songwriting ability made up for his or her vocal inadequacies (or whose rough voice actually lent authenticity to the mature tenor of the lyrics). It's easy to see why Ben Arnold won a major-label contract in the 1990s, since he was very much in the singer/songwriter tradition so beloved of both rock critics and A&R people, both hoping to discover the next Dylan (or even the next Elvis Costello), and it's just as easy to see why he was dropped after his Ruffhouse/Columbia Records debut, Almost Speechless, garnered nothing more than the expected good reviews in the fall of 1995. Since then, Arnold has managed to put together an independently released collection of his demos, In Case I'm Gone Tomorrow (2000), and, finally, this third album. His talents are on display immediately on "Zig Zag," one of several songs he seems to have written as a means of self-encouragement ("A better day is up ahead," he reassures us and himself). Arnold and his backup musicians, led by multi-instrumentalist Scott Bricklin, tend to come up with arrangements that aspire to the combustible rock shuffle style of the Rolling Stones, with various ear-catching gimmicks thrown in, and they are consistently pleasing. The lyrics are often witty and always literate, but Arnold sings them in one of those "singer/songwriter" voices, a wheezy whisper that would be happy to ...
