Treasure Island Movie Review Average Rating: (3.7 out of 5 stars) Childhood revisited.......!!! I remember this film from my childhood years, and I recall that I was extremely
impressed by it. To see it 50 years later
and remind oneself with those long, long-forgotten days. Robert Newton was very convincing as the good-hearted buccaneer. Pirates don't come any better, anymore.......! Submitted by y.ben-david (givatayim, Israel) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
AS GOOD AS 50 YEARS AGO! I saw Treasure Island when I was a youngster a long, long time ago. The acting, especially Long John Silver, is excellent, and the pirates are just as realistic and nasty as those in The Pirates of the Caribbean...a "treaure" to own after all these years. A good old movie Treasure Island is one of those classic old Disney movies. It's not Pirates of the Carribean, but it's still fun to watch. Submitted by Blake (Brandon,MS) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
For some good old-time entertainment Well, I hadn't seen this 1950 Disney film since I was a child. Seeing it again, I now understand why it is still cherished by many and regarded as a good film. Sure, there's some bad acting here, with over-the-top performances, but if you've never seen Robert Newton as Long John Silver, then you are missing finding out where the quintissential pirate sterotype came from. He's simply wonderful. The rest of the film's attributes are above average as well. Short, simple interpretation of the book's plot but a few nice surprises as well. Best of all, you can watch this with the entire family and feast on popcorn with no guilt. Submitted by a reviewer (Raleigh, NC, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Treasure Island movie DVD
$10.29 John Ford's memorable screen version of John Steinbeck's epic novel of the Great Depression--often regarded as the director's best film--stars Henry Fonda as Tom Joad. After having served a brief prison sentence for manslaughter, Joad arrives at his family's Oklahoma farm only to find it abandoned. Muley (John Qualen), a neighbor now nearly mad with grief, tells Tom of the drought that has transformed the farmland of Oklahoma into a desert and of the preying land agents who have plowed under the shacks of the sharecroppers. Joined by former hellfire preacher Casy (John Carradine), Tom finds his extended family, including Pa (Charles Grapewin) and his indomitable Ma (Jane Darwell), packing their ramshackle truck to seek work in the fields of California. As the family treks across the country, their dissolution begins with the deaths of Tom's grandparents at close intervals. When they arrive in California, the Joads find only an abundance of poverty-stricken migrants like themselves and little in the way of potential work. Yet, ever resilient, they maintain their dignity, hoping for the best.
Among the talented cast, Fonda does perhaps the best work of his career, as does Qualen in the film's most haunting sequence. Director of photography Gregg Toland captures the suffering and the weathered, luminous nobility of the Joads and the other uprooted, drifting families, creating striking images equal to the best work of Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans. In a stirring film that stands as a microcosm of the depression experience of millions, Ford gives ...

| | Something The Lord Made DVD (2004) Widescreen
Treasure Island video
$6.35 Based on a true story, SOMETHING THE LORD MADE tells the absorbing tale of two doctors who bucked tradition and racial prejudice to revolutionize the medical world. The American south in the 1940s could be a fearsome place for anyone attempting to ply a well-meaning trade, as it was riddled with strictly-enforced racial boundaries. The two men in question--Dr. Alfred Blalock (Alan Rickman) and African-American lab technician Vivien Thomas (Mos Def)--work fastidiously on a new technique for helping babies with heart problems, and achieve some impressive, and innovative results. Under any other circumstances the men would have been exhilarated by their advances, and widely applauded throughout the medical profession. But the dark heart of the south causes innumerable problems for the brave pioneers, as the prejudices brought to bear on the men become unbearable. Moving and dramatic in equal measures, director Joseph Sargent's film is a bold retelling of a vital chapter in the history of the medical profession.
the emotional true story of two men who defied the rules of their time to launch a medical revolution, set against the backdrop of the Jim Crow south. Working ...
