John Barry's best score for any James Bond movie -- including the best song ("We Have All the Time in the World") ever written for any movie in the series -- is reasonably well represented on this CD. Barry had already begun adding more diverse and complex orchestral pieces to his underscoring and greater lyricism to his songs with the preceding movie, You Only Live Twice, and he continued the process with On Her Majesty's Secret Service. The serious nature of its plot, however, and the unique mood of the movie, dictated that almost an entirely new score be devised: the brassy "007 Theme," which had appeared in three prior films, was absent, and the "James Bond Theme" was re-arranged. One of John Barry's best efforts, with a particularly striking title song belted out by Shirley Bassey between blasting brass fills, Goldfinger was also the first James Bond soundtrack to hit the number one spot on the U.S. charts (ironically, displacing another United Artists soundtrack, A Hard Day's Night), even as Bassey's performance hit number eight as a single. On his score for Ron Howard's brooding Western The Missing, James Horner reins in some of his lush tendencies as a composer, delivering a restrained but still emotional collection of music. Nevertheless, even the score's smaller compositions, such as "New Mexico, 1885," retain the epic sound that defines Horner's work. This tension is put to particularly good use on "Dawn to Dusk; The Riderless Horse," which begins with delicate flutes and strings before soaring into a quietly majestic melody that becomes darker and more ominous as it unfolds.
