Free and Equal finds its place somewhere between John Surman's past collaborations with Jack DeJohnette and his Brass Project with composer Peter Warren. Less atmospheric than the duos with the drummer and less jazzy than the latter, it still bears the inimitable stamp of the British reed player. It harks back to his pastoral and even medieval leanings and his arranging skills certainly capture the spotlight, his lyrical and often fragile compositions soaring with incredible grace. Compared to his Warren collaboration, Surman chooses a different approach, since his brass section is not comprised of seasoned jazz musicians. London Brass are primarily a classical chamber music ensemble, although some of the group's members clearly show an understanding of the jazz idiom and improvisation. As a result, the leader goes for a more collective and cohesive sound. The brass ensemble often serves the same purpose as a choir, and Surman's beautiful voicings for its various sections surely benefit from that. DeJohnette appears comfortable in this setting. He is allowed on some occasions to turn up the heat, although his main role remains as a colorist. Ultimately, the album does a fine job of documenting another facet of Surman's writing for brass instruments and provides for a beautiful aural experience. ~ Alain Drouot

| | John Taylor Rosslyn CD (2003)
Free And Equal CD music
$15.55 It's hard to believe that the British jazz pianist John Taylor is actually self-taught, since his playing is so fluent and sophisticated and is matched by a fine pianistic touch reminiscent of Keith Jarrett and the early Chick Corea. Ultimately, however, Taylor is his own man and is much more concise than the fulsome Jarrett. The careful web of harmony that he spins on the title track of the haunting 2003 trio offering ROSSLYN is proof enough of that. Accompanying Taylor are Marc Johnson on bass and N.Y.C. "downtown" star Joey ...
| | Dave Holland Extended Play: Live At Birdland CDs (2003)
Free And Equal music CDs
$21.15 EXTENDED PLAY was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album.
With a front line that features saxophone, trombone, and vibraphone/marimba, the Dave Holland Quintet features an immediately identifiable band sound. As for backing, bassist Holland and traps man Billy Kilson provide a push-me-pull-you, supple and responsive rhythm section that is an embarrassment of riches when it comes to accompaniment ideas.
The thing that separates the men from the boys in the world of jazz improvisation is listening--when the performers are paying close attention to one another, the creative horizons are all but limitless. It would be a slight to say this quintet is all on the same page, better to imagine they all bring their knowledge of great art and fine cuisine to bear each time they play together--it's a multi-faceted, heady brew. Holland's compositions are angular but never dissonant, polished but also earthy. The illusion is that these tunes flow effortlessly from this smart ensemble. The truth is that this is one of the best ...
| | Marilyn Crispell Storyteller CD (2004)
Free And Equal songs
$15.55 Seven years after the unprecedented ECM debut, Nothing Ever Was, Anyway, and three years after the stellar Amaryllis, pianist Marilyn Crispell gives listeners another trip down her ever deepening cavern of mystery and imagination. Teamed once again with drummer and composer Paul Motian and new bassist Mark Helias, Crispell builds an even sturdier tension bridge between her increasing focus on harmonic and melodic interplay and dynamic intensity. The polarities are the immediate way into this set, which is so full of ambiguities and spectral presences one could say it is haunted. Crispell's physicality is held in check for most of the proceedings here, but it is ever present. There is a tautness to these performances that is held firmly by the steady, sinewy rhythmic direction of Helias (who contributed two fine tunes to this set). Crispell wrote three pieces for this recording, all of them signifying a direction the ensemble travels in a labyrinthine fashion for a time. These are underscored and elaborated upon in her choice of six of Motian's tunes covering some 30 years. In fact, the title track, which feels like a Crispell signature, was composed by Motian. What sets Storyteller apart from most recordings out there is its depth of feeling and the unveiled manner in which it is displayed.
In the tempered pieces such as "Wild Rose," "Alone," "Flght of the Bluejay," and "The Sunflower," one can hear how Crispell's reliance on depth and instinct has ...
| | Miles Davis Cellar Door Sessions 1970 CDs (2005) Remastered; Box Set; Special Edition
Free And Equal album
$87.89 Contains previously unreleased material. Some of the recordings on the CELLAR DOOR SESSIONS were originally released in edited form on the 1971 double-LP LIVE EVIL.
There is an entire universe contained in this box. Sumptuously packaged and scrupulously annotated, CELLAR DOOR SESSIONS 1970 is a six-disc set that documents Miles Davis's extended residency at the Washington, D.C., club. Davis is backed by a group of genius musicians: keyboardist Keith Jarrett, drummer Jack DeJohnette, bassist Michael Henderson, saxophonist Gary Bartz, percussionist Airto Moreira and guitarist John McLaughlin (who appears only on the last two discs). Together they pioneered an ecstatic fusion of jazz, rock, funk, and abstract sound-painting that established the blueprint for the future of progressive music.
Each disc contains a different live set, and while songs are often repeated across the set lists, no two tracks sound the same. The players improvise at a fever-pitch, pushing themselves to endless invention, and the ensemble's interplay--expressionistic, protean, and fierce--is near telepathic. The influence of rock artists like Sly Stone and Jimi Hendrix can be heard in the layering of deep funk rhythms and psychedelic inflections (especially with Miles's wah-filtered trumpet), but ...
| | Paul Motian Garden Of Eden CD (2006)
Free And Equal CD music
$13.19 The follow-up to I HAVE THE ROOM ABOVE HER, Paul Motian's lauded collaboration with guitarist Bill Frisell and saxophonist Joe Lovano, 2006's GARDEN OF EDEN finds the veteran jazz drummer leading a much larger ensemble through a remarkable set. As with the previous outing, Motian presents inventive covers of tunes by Jerome Kern (a light, gentle take on "Bill") and Thelonious Monk (the shuffling rendition of "Evidence"), but that's where obvious similarities between the two albums end. GARDEN features the unusual lineup of three guitarists, two saxophonists, and a bassist, all intuitively led by Motian's dynamic and dexterous ...
| | Big Band Sounds: Swing Era 1938-1939 CD (2003)
Free And Equal music CDs
$16.45 In 1938 swing began a period of expansion. Although Fletcher Henderson's great band was now non-existent, new bands were gaining popularity with leaders Woody Herman, Bob Crosby and Count Basie. Cultural barriers were being broken. Benny Goodman lectured at the City College in New York and he and Count Basie appeared at Carnegie Hall. A major Manhattan hotel allowed the performance of a black swing band led by Chick Webb. The ...
| | Big Band Sounds: Swing Era, The 50'S CD (2003)
Free And Equal songs
$16.45 After the disheartening weeks in 1946 when half a dozen of the biggest bands in the business broke up, there seemed to be no future for swing. Bands reformed themselves but it was not the same. New idols and new kinds of jazz were pushing into the spotlight. Theaters no longer hired bands due to TV competition. Radio had been usurped by disc jockeys who did not need live bands. People did not dance to jazz any more. And musicians returning from military service found it hard to get jobs. The competition for jobs helped swing in that leaders had their pick of sidemen and the bands recovered ...
