The "Pop … Paris" series provides convincing evidence that London was not the only swinging spot in the sixties. In five volumes and 110 tracks, it reunites the most important artists of the Pop movement in France at that time: Johnny Hallyday, Michel Polnareff, France Gall, Serge Gainsbourg, Brigitte Bardot, Henri Salvador, Marie Laforˆt, Nino Ferrer, Ronnie Bird, Claude Fran‡ois, Eddy Mitchell and more. Many unfamous names are also featured - but great songs, including French remakes from American hits (much like the heralded "1000 Nadelstiche" series of German remakes of American hits in Germany). This installment of the Winter Solstice series presents an of winter-themed recordings. In addition to usual Windham Hill artists such as George Winston and Liz Story, there are appearances by Marion Meadows, Todd Cochran, Narada recruit David Arkenstone, and the quartet of Brian Keane, Michael Manring, Paul McCandless and Lew Soloff. Perhaps surprisingly, the lack of traditional holiday material only enhances this disc's appeal, as do the first-rate performances. For his second CD Heid asserts himself further as a composer of modern organ based music, a monstrous improvisor, and one who milks the Hammond B-3 sound for all it's worth. Detroit guitarist Perry Hughes and drummer Randy Gelespie round out this exciting trio, as they romp through ten of Heid's originals and the Wes Montgomery odd ditty, "Going On To Detroit." At his most frantic, Heid wails with wigged out madness. The bluesy hot bop title track with fleet and sweet guitar-organ unison, stinging single lines from Hughes, and tasteful trading of eights indicates only the beginning. The jumpy, frantic melody of the waltz "Bag Of Iku" leaps like a panther, punctuated by equally quick guitar chords. Most like Larry Young from an orchestral, expansive standpoint, the tribute to Grant Green "Grantacious" is guitar lead while Heid holds spacious, zen-like notes that drive deep and burn blue.
