Personnel: Kem (vocals, keyboards); David McMurray (tenor saxophone); Edward Gooch (trumpet); Fred "Rodriguez" Robinson (bass guitar); Andre "Zapp" Driscoll (drums); Marlon "Wild Bill" Curry (percussion). Recording information: Masterpiece Sound, Detroit, MI; Willray Productions, Detroit, MI. Arranger: Kem. Detroiter Kem Owens landed a five-album deal with Motown, and it's plain to see in the talent on display throughout his debut, Kemistry, why the label was attracted to him. Another reason why he was snapped up has to be for the lack of development that talent requires -- here, he arrives as fully formed as a label can hope for. Not only does Kem write, arrange, and produce all of his material, but he plays keyboards and also sings in a comforting, non-flashy manner. He isn't anxious to let you know he has a four-octave range. In fact, he's at the top of his game when his words of devotion and faith are gently wrapped around skeletal and hushed arrangements. He knows his strengths and never out-steps his boundaries, delivering a consistent, mature cross of R&B and jazz. ~ Andy Kellman Like a male Sade, or vintage Steely Dan without the irony, smooth R&B vocalist Kem weaves mellow, late-night musical tapestries over '70s-style jazz grooves. In the process, he manages to sound completely contemporary without so much as a single hip-hop beat or squiggly synth line. Kem's voice is an instrument of subtle grace and power, his vocal timbre and clipped phrasing owing an immediately obvious debt to Sam Cooke, but, interestingly, also occasionally recalling Dave Matthews. Best of all, however, is the Motown vocalist's sense of restraint. The maturity of his delivery belies his youth and puts many established vocalists to shame. Combining the best elements of Luther Vandross, Lou Rawls, and Seal, Kem delivers a slab of jazz-inflected rhythm & blues that proves it's still possible to serve up a maximum amount of soul with a minimum of fuss. The hottest new jazz/R&B talent in years If you are into jazz and R&B music, Kem's first album "Kemistry" is a must hear. He uses his soothing unique voice as another instrument blending rythm and range into a melodic wonder. Watch for his second album due out in March 2005, it sounds as good as his first. MAARVELOUS!!!!!!!!!! As a "new" artist I more than pleased with this cd. He has the diveristy and control of Al Jarreau reaching highs and lows so smoothly it is hardly noticable. I put this in my car and had to buy another cd for the house! And lets not forget the band..thank God for sax players and Guitarists...I can't say enough about this cd it is simply MAARVELOUW!! Smooth I was quite impressed with the soul this man has, and it come through clearly in his music. Beside the already popular "Love Calls' ballad, there are other items on the the CD that I feel will be hits. Submitted by a reviewer (Detroit, Michigan) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Surprisingly refreshing It's wonderful to hear a new artist with a unique sound who writes real music. You can understand his words, and hum the tunes. Thank you, Kem. Submitted by a reviewer (Wayne, PA , USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

The group's biggest and most identifiable hit, "It's Your Thing," is featured twice, each version extremely inspired.
