Of course, Highway to Hell is the final album AC/DC recorded with Bon Scott, the lead singer who provided the group with a fair share of its signature sleaze. Just months after its release, Scott literally partied himself to death, dying of alcohol poisoning after a night of drinking, a rock & roll fatality that took no imagination to predict. In light of his passing, it's hard not to see Highway to Hell as a last testament of sorts, being that it was his last work and all, and if Scott was going to go out in a blaze of glory, this certainly was the way to do it. This is a veritable rogue's gallery of deviance, from cheerfully clumsy sex talk and drinking anthems to general outlandish behavior. It's tempting to say that Scott might have been prescient about his end -- or to see the title track as ominous in the wake of his death -- trying to spill it all out on paper, but it's more accurate to say that the ride had just gotten very fast and very wild for AC/DC, and he was simply flying high. After all, it wasn't just Scott who reached a new peak on Highway to Hell; so did the Young brothers, crafting their monster riffs into full-fledged, undeniable songs. This is their best set of songs yet, from the incessant, intoxicating boogie of "Girls Got Rhythm" to "If You Want Blood (You've Got It)." Some of the credit should also go to Robert John "Mutt" Lange, who gives the album a precision and magnitude that the Vanda & Young LPs lacked in their grimy charm. Filtered through Mutt's mixing board, AC/DC has never sounded so enormous, and they've never had such great songs, and they had never delivered an album as singularly bone-crunching or classic as this until now. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
It will always be a mystery how a grown man can spend his life wearing a school tie and short pants and receive adulation from the heavy metal fraternity. HM followers do not tolerate a cissy, yet the hugely talented Angus Young has become something of a hero. His riff-laden fills, combined with the tough vocals of the late Bon Scott, made AC/DC one of the genre's all-time leading lights. Bordering on the lighter side of metal, songs such as 'Love Hungry Man', 'Touch Too Much' and the title track will always delight.Q (12/94, p.157) - 3 Stars - Good - "...a 41-minute jackhammer groove that, years later, would still be obsessing everyone from Run DMC to Killing Joke. Rick Rubin's Def American label was probably blueprinted the minute he heard 'Girls Got Rhythm'..."
Mojo (Publisher) (12/00, p.84) - "...By retaining their simplicity and adding a bit of polish, 'Mutt' Lange produced their first million-seller, its air-punching title track quickly becoming a staple at teenagers' booze-fuelled parties on both sides of the Atlantic..."

5 stars Incredible..
Wow..just wow..this album is one of the finest efforts by one of the most profound Hard Rock acts of all time. Any fan of post-Bon Scott AC/DC should give this record a spin, tracks like "Girls Got Rhythm," "Beating Around the Bush," and "Love Hungry Man" will make any Brian Johnson fan realize who is the superior front man.

5 stars Surely their best album ever.
I know some will disagree with Mutt Lange's approach with AC/DC, but to me he clearly brought to light their best. Here he does what Vanda/Young couldn't figure out with the sound on Powerage.I'm always torn between Let there be rock or Highway to hell as my fave.

5 stars Nice.
I never really liked AC/DC, but this album changed everything. I love every song on it, especially Night Prowler. I'll have that on repeat for hours. It's amazing!

5 stars A classic
Highway to Hell, along with Let There be Rock re the very best from AC/DC. Not to take anything away from the Johnson era. I remember when this came out in late summer 79 and partying hard to it. I remember soing the same later to Back in Black, but it just wasn't the same. This album contains some great songs. Bon was quite a lyricist.

5 stars Bon's last stand
The Bon Scott years were AC/DCs finest moments and this album says 'goodbye' as he cruises down the 'highway to hell'. It's a phenomenally good album, full of adrenalin pumping ballsy rock that's always synonymous with AC/DCs no-bull style. We salute you, Bon!

No one took the late-'60s East Coast sound further than (the aptly named) Randy California and his band mates in Spirit, who brought jazz, blues and classical into the psych-rock mix. Here's their 1973 ''best-of'' remastered plus five bonus cuts 'Silky Sam', 'Aren't You Glad', 'I'm Truckin', 'So Little To Fly' & 'Taurus'. 16 tracks in all! Epic/legacy. 2003. Spirit: Jay Ferguson, Randy California, John Locke, Mark Andes, Ed Cassidy.
Producers: David Briggs, Lou Adler, Spirit.
Recorded between 1967 & 1970. Includes liner notes by Ron Garmon.
Personnel: Jay Ferguson (vocals); John Locke (keyboards).
Recording information: 11/07/1967-??/??/1970.
Photographers: Jay Thompson; Jill Furmanovsky.
It's true that Spirit were a very album-oriented band, one that might best be experienced through albums rather than compilations. If a compilation's good enough for you, this is a good one to get. Granted, the band's mere handful of well-known songs are gotten out of the way right away ("1984," "Mechanical World," "Nature's Way," "Animal Zoo," "Fresh-Garbage," "I Got a Line on You"). But the rest of it's pretty solid too, including "Uncle Jack," a high point of pseudo-Beatleish psychedelia. Given the tendency of some of the albums from which these are taken to meander, this is actually a good alternative for the listener who likes Spirit's most accessible tunes, but isn't enamored of their full-length works. ~ Richie Unterberger
The members of Spirit had such wide-ranging musical backgrounds it's a wonder that they came together at all. The band managed to create four fine albums before splintering and reforming in a series of altered lineups. The group's blend of jazz, rock & roll, and pop leanings resulted in some surprising singles. Perhaps most audacious was the group's first hit, "Mechanical World." The song sounds like nothing else on ...
