Despite the fact that the band's best days were obviously behind them, a live album for AC/DC was all but completely necessary. After all, the group's first live release, If You Want Blood You've Got It, was recorded at a time when AC/DC was nothing more than a cult act that had yet to produce many of its future rock staples. Though recorded well into their career on the Razor's Edge 1991 tour, AC/DC Live surprisingly captures the hype and excitement that made AC/DC such a hit in their heyday. The set list wisely overlooks the songs from the band's mid-'80s slump and concentrates on hard rock hits such as "Hells Bells," "Back in Black," "Highway to Hell," and "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap." Brian Johnson's voice may not be as strong as in the early '80s, but he still sounds competent in his role. All too often, a live album is a cheaply made, rushed recording that only serves as a testament to a band's decline. AC/DC Live, however, shows what makes this band different from their peers -- here they are still entirely capable of pulling off a great live show. This ranks among the best live metal albums of the '90s. [In February 2003, the American distribution rights to AC/DC's back catalog transferred over to Epic, their new label. Epic reissued the band's catalog as remastered digipacks containing lavish, expanded booklets with plenty of rare photographs, memorabilia, and notes. Although the digipacks may wear a little too easy, the sound is terrific -- clean and muscular, enhancing the raw qualities of the original record -- and the packaging is loving, making the reissues necessary for collectors.] ~ Barry Weber AC/DC reclaimed its status as gutbucket rock n' rollers to be reckoned with on this searing double-disc live set. The year was 1992, more than 15 years after the group's first recording. By this point, the band was approaching middle age, a time when most rockers settle into the lazy comfort of their genres. From the opening guitar shards of "Thunderstruck," it is clear no such concessions have been made. The bass drum falls in, not so much a timekeeper as an underground detonation device, and the repeated cries of "thunder!" gain volume like an approaching army. The difference being that this is an army with one mission and one mission only: to knock the lights out of anyone within earshot. The album succeeds not only because the exuberant pounding the band gives to the familiar "Back in Black," "Highway to Hell," "Shoot to Thrill" and "Who Made Who," but also because of the equal pulverizing of older Bon Scott era numbers such as "Sin City" and "High Voltage." Vocalist Brian Johnson, in particular, injects some his best screeches in years. Live albums used to mean something. | Live Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Bon Scott singing? This album was recorded in 1990-1991. Bon Scott was the original singer so he has co-writing credits on nine of the tunes, but contrary to the other review, I'm pretty sure Brian Johnson is the vocalist on this entire album. They have since released a live album that features old recordings with Bon Scott though.
In any event, this is a great album, AC/DC at their best. I don't understand the reviewer who said this is too similar to the studio recordings either. It's live AC/DC, that's how they play, what more do you want?
I have the original CD release, I don't how the remaster sounds. Some remasters are excessively peak limited to be louder, sometimes too loud, so I don't feel the need to purchase the remaster. Submitted by beebster (california) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Best AC/DC Collection Yet If you can't buy all of AC/DC's albums, but you still want a decent amount of their songs, this is the set for you. The 2 CDs have a total of 23 songs on them from AC/DC's live performances. 9 of them have Bon Scott singing, 8 of them have Brian Johnson singing, and the remaining 6 are from the Young brothers only. So it's a pretty well-rounded album. Overall, most of the songs sound almost studio-quality and are worth listening to. A few songs, such as "Shoot To Thrill" and a few others, have quiet vocals for some reason or another. But, on those few songs, the guitars, bass, and drums are still easy to hear. In the end, this is the best AC/DC set out there without having to buy all of their albums individually. It loses 1 star because of the quiet vocals on a few songs. One last thing: the Japanese version of this set comes with the extra track "Hell Ain't A Bad Place To Be" on disc 2. Submitted by CD_Music_Freak (Earth) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Great Stuff This is probably the second best live album I've ever heard. The best I've listened to is KISS Alive! Great renditions of Thunderstruck, Back In Black, and Hells Bells. Awesome CD Submitted by tommycicchitti (Las Vegas, NV) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Are you ready for the night line? This CD is one of the best live albums I have heard to date.
I thought The Who's Live At Leeds was good.
This album blows me away.
Angus and that raw electric guitar feel is just something else.
Back In Black is one of my favourites, and is played as if by God's axe.
Awesome. Submitted by gmanparadise (New Zealand) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Good Performance It's a good album, but I really expected more of AC/DC in the scenary. Their songs are just to similar to the orginal recordings and there's nothing that makes the difference. Plus, I don't think it's a real concert; it must be outakes from different live perfromances. Anyway its AC/DC and it rocks Submitted by Fran (Wallingford, CT, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Photographer: Ross Halfin. After Speak of the Devil, Tribute, Just Say Ozzy, Live & Loud, the Ozzfest collections, and both Osbourne-fronted Black Sabbath live discs, one would think that Ozzy had exhausted his concert-album appeal. But due to the success of his reality TV show, Osbourne once again decided it was time for another live album. Although Osbourne's live performances were still rock-solid during the recording of this tour, Live at Budokan seems mighty excessive. The only positive thing about yet another one is to hear the intense live work of Zakk Wylde, who has been the cornerstone of Osbourne's sound longer than any other sideman he has ever worked with. His squealing leads and chunky guitar sound great here, displaying a talent for pure heavy metal that few other players could live up to in 2002. But at the same time, you can hear his amazing guitar work on at least two other Ozzy live discs, and the songs that are new to this environment (i.e., most of the first half of the album) are all taken from Down to Earth, which he plays on in the first place. This album sounds fine, is packaged nicely, and would make a ni

Photographer: Rocky Schenck. Despite a never-ending succession of guitarists, Ozzy Osbourne never changed his basic musical attack over the years. There are slight differences between the records, with the only noticeable distinctions being the production fads of the time. Ozzmosis, his sixth solo studio album, isn't all that different from his previous two records, No More Tears and No Rest for the Wicked, largely due to the still impressive skills of guitarist Zakk Wylde. However, even Wylde's prowess is diluted by the slick, modern-rock conscious production by Michael Beinhorn (Soul Asylum). Occasionally, the guitar is synthesized, which is indicative of the album's main flaw -- on the surface, the music is hard and loud, but it actually sounds smooth and processed. Furthermore, there's a distinct lack of fully formed songs and riffs, which is what really sinks the record. Osbourne can survive bad production -- he has for most of his career -- but he can't survive without having anything to sing. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Let us all be thankful that Ozzy's retirement didn't stick. It supposedly lasted for three days, after which he got bored a

Sony Music's "Essential" series of limited-edition two-disc compilations of major artists has been well-assembled generally, and Ozzy Osbourne's increased celebrity following the success of the "reality" TV series The Osbournes justifies his inclusion, as does his string of multi-platinum albums dating back to 1980. The 29-track collection presents most of the highlights of his solo career, from Blizzard of Ozz to Down to Earth, including such U.K. and/or U.S. hits as "Bark at the Moon," "No More Tears," "Perry Mason," and "Mama, I'm Coming Home," as well as the Grammy-winning live version of "I Don't Want to Change the World." Missing from the song list are such favorites as "Shot in the Dark," a Top 20 U.K. hit that made the Top Ten of Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart, and "Back on Earth," another major Mainstream Rock hit; both tracks can be found on the 1997 hits collection The Ozzman Cometh. And "Close My Eyes Forever," Osbourne's duet with Lita Ford, which was a gold-selling single and made the Top Ten of the Hot 100, is not in the Sony vaults and was not licensed. So, The Essential Ozzy Osbourne is not the perfect two-CD sampler of Osbourne's solo career. But it is a very good one, and new fans attracted by the TV show who wonder what his music is like will get an accurate representation of it here. ~ William Ruhlmann Sony Music's "Essential" series of limited-edition two-disc compilations of major artists has been well-assembled generally, and Ozzy Osbourne's increased celebrity following the success of the "reality" TV series The Osbournes jus

This Is Neo-Goth is yet another daunting three-disc package from Cleopatra, one that compiles 27 industrial-dance tracks for the first two discs and then provides a mix from adequate Hawaiian DJ RiB (aka Razed in Black, who also contributes the song "Share This Poison") for the third. It's a fair and hardly definitive selection (considering the title), including material from Orgy, Velvet Acid Christ, :wumpscut, Electric Hellfire Club, Strawberry Switchblade, Wolfsheim, VNV Nation, and Spahn Ranch. Fans of these groups might enjoy the mix disc, which is pulled off with a good degree of skill. | | Judith Owen Twelve Arrows CD (2003)
Live
$11.65 Personnel: Judith Owen; Julia Fordham, Richard Thompson. 12 Arrows is a 12-song program that showcases vocalist Judith Owen in trio form with drummer Herman Matthews and bassist Sean Hurley. Owen also performs two great duets -- one each with Richard Thompson and Julia Fordham. Owen plays piano and sings in a velvety alto voice that endears her listeners with tasteful simplicity. On "That Scares Me," the harmonious duet with Julia Fordham, she pulls you into the song and beautifully cultivates the life experience that many have felt but never expressed. This ballad is sung in a highly personal style that Owen's listeners can surely relate to. With family and friends often the subject matter, Owen expresses her writing talents and musical depth on 11 of the 12 songs. Having written all of the music and lyrics except for "Black Hole Sun," she illustrates the same sort of compassion, understanding, and poetic witticism in her storytelling as Carly Simon and Joni Mitchell have so brilliantly demonstrated with their music. Overall, 12 Arrows is a radical departure from Owen's last record, Limited Edition, but it is consistent with the same high standards set with by Owen's do-it-yourself work ethic. Top pick: "Some Arrows Go in Deep." ~ Paula Edelstein
