The Japanese version of Asian Dub Foundation's ENEMY OF THE ENEMY comes with one bonus cut.
Enemy of the Enemy certainly isn't Asian Dub Foundation's strongest effort. While the band has created wonderfully bombastic and soaring sonic confections in the past, they drop the ball repeatedly here, struggling to find interesting melodies or a political stance with weight. One can't fault the Foundation for trying to keep pace with the U.K. music scene; indeed, the lo-fi production of the Streets is stamped all over the album as an inspiration. But mixing such moody copy-and-paste samples with Public Enemy-like ferocity amounts to a kind of musical sludge that never truly takes off. Really only four tracks stand out. "1000 Mirrors" sees guest vocalist Sinéad O'Connor offering up the most confident vocals she's sung in years. O'Connor's voice feverishly details oppression as her cohorts settle into a sticky, moody dub groove. This virtual Celtic Dub Foundation makes for fascinating listening. It's the kind of mesmerizing result one had hoped for from Massive Attack's 100th Window, where O'Connor tackled similar themes and genres. "Fortress Europe," "Rise to the Challenge," and "Basta" are the album's other clear winners. Here the band assaults, innovates, and explores melody, blending drum'n'bass, reggae vibes, and exotic instrumentation toward a catchy goal. But it seems like every other track is either unfinished, rushed, or just in place as filler. Weak vocals, clichéd lyrics, poor sequencing, and overall studio sloppiness make for sub-par songs that work more like background noise than anything the band has released in the past. Comparing the album to similar genre experiments from bands like Leftfield sees Asian Dub Foundation falling somewhat behind. While Enemy of the Enemy has its bright spots, it's definitely a below-average release from a band who's shown more imagination and had more relevance on previous albums. ~ Tim DiGravina

La Semilla Escondida is the third album from French fusionist Sergent Garcia, the title referring to the "hidden seed" of reggae that infuses the whole of the work. Garcia's style of choice is what he's termed "salsamuffin," a melding of Cuban and Jamaican forms (primarily salsa and ragamuffin, but including aspects of hip-hop, jazz, son, ska, and more). Underlying nearly all of the pieces is a bouncing reggae guitar loop of sorts, often with a loping beat to boot. Garcia and his band perform some quite worthwhile salsa and reggae both, switching flawlessly from Spanish to English to French as the tone calls for. More interesting, though, is the intermixing of the Cuban and Jamaican idioms. The reggae beat is always present, but Cuban percussion motifs are common as well. The large brass section capably plays ska riffs and hot Cuban concepts equally well, but often within the countering style (ska riffs in what's otherwise a piece of son, Cuban flamboyance in an otherwise subdued bit of reggae dub). The album opens musically with some basic raga, moving then into a mix of Cuban and Jamaican, followed in turn by some Latin jazz complete with a flute loop in "El Asalto." "Mi Ultima Voluntad" moves between a salsa singing style, Spanish hip-hop, and a laid-back reggae keyboard. Looking at the cover of Huey Lewis & the News' Live at 25, it's hard not to think, "Wow! I had no idea that the News had 25 members!" Of course, the middle-aged men crowding the cover of this 2005 release number a mere nine, which means the one-time sextet has been expanded with a full horn section (original guitarist Chris Hayes has been replaced by Stef Burns and bassist Mario Cipollina has been replaced by John Pierce, as well). Christ has to get some credit for the name alone, but it's all about how everything sounds in the end, and on the one-man act's second full album it sounds pretty good. The general sonic shift among solo electronic performers away from an endless series of Aphex Twin knockoffs to a more flowing, meditative sound in a new century can be heard here (even as song titles like "Happyfour Twenty" and "Holobenthic Grex Venalium" show there's some ways to go yet). To Christ's further credit, though, Blue Shift Emissions isn't simply another electronic shoegaze album as such, hinting back a bit further to roots like Apollo-era Eno. Certainly the long, stretched-out drones that underpin nearly everything on the disc have a general relation to the gaze approach but they are more often used as core lengthy loops, while the crisp percussion steers away from aggro glitch in favor of tense, understated tension. "Ganky" is a sharp example, with the blend of the above elements further punctuated by soft tones and almost exploratory jazz hooks via keyboards. It's not an original mix, but it is a very well-handled one, and the result is an 11-song album that seems to get better as it goes, the more so because the songs all aim for being distinct pieces rather ...
