The entire output of the prolific Original Indiana Five is available on four CDs by Jazz Oracle and one from the Frog label, none of which duplicate each other. This particular disc has the band's final recordings and does not differ all that much from their earliest sides, at least until the final vocal-dominated selections. There are two numbers ("Stompin' Fool" and "Indiana Mud") that, although thought originally to be Indiana Five items, are most likely by a Sam Lanin group; they were issued as by the Dixie Daisies. Guest singer Bob Merwin is on four of the five last selections and is OK, but the high points are such instrumentals as "Brown Sugar," "Indiana Shuffle," "Struttin' Jerry," "My Melancholy Baby," "Rarin' to Go," and "Moten Stomp." Collectors of 1920s jazz will want all of the Original Indiana Five discs, which make available dozens of formerly very scarce performances. ~ Scott Yanow
This CD contains songs from 1926-28 and is the fourth and final of Jazz Oracle's series covering the complete output of the Original Indiana Five, with the exception of the sides recorded for the Harmony label, which can be found on the Frog label (FRG #

$19.25 A variety of overlapping jazz-oriented dance bands from 1929-1930 whose records were released by the Banner, Dorn, Oriole, Sterling, Domino, Crown, Apex, Cameo, and Jewel labels are heard on this high-quality CD of rarities. Such fine studio players as trumpeter Tommy Gott, Andy Sannella (on clarinet and alto), pianist Russ Carlson, and Larry Abbott on reeds are among the few musicians who are identified, and most of the songs (which include "I Wanna Go Back to Indiana," ...

Vol 4 album
$13.79 As the 1990s drew to a close, Timeless Historical reissued a large number of recordings from the '20s and '30s by musicians both legendary and obscure, in a series coordinated by seasoned specialists Chris Barber, John R.T. Davies, and Brian Rust. One fascinating aspect of this label's catalog is an interconnected web of bands that all lead back to the California Ramblers, a Midwestern group which was among the most prolific studio ensembles of the '20s. While the full-sized Ramblers recorded for various labels as the Golden Gate Orchestra, the Varsity Eight, the University Six, and the Vagabonds, a scaled-down version of the band made records for Columbia as the Little Ramblers, for Pathe as the Five Birmingham Babies, ...

| | Larry Carlton No Substitutions: Live In Osaka CD (2001)
Vol 4 songs
$10.95 Lighting-fast phrases, spectacular solos, and soothing statements abound in this first ever "live" collaboration by two guitar icons. Larry Carlton on the left side and Steve Lukather on the right side are astounding on No Substitutions: Live in Osaka. This was the first recorded onstage collaboration of the guitarists, even though they had met nearly 25 years before performing in a club environment, and their first-take energy comes through loud and clear. Joined by drummer Gregg Bissonette, keyboardist Rick Jackson, and bassist Chris Kent, the award-winning guitarists perform a no-holds-barred set on five extended tunes that range from a 14-minute version of Jeff Beck's "The Pump" to the legendary Miles Davis tune "All Blues" and Carlton's signature piece, "Room 335." The tremendous interaction between Carlton and Lukather works extremely well on "All Blues," their frets working together in melodic harmony while displaying their original musical personalities. Amplified rock licks bring this song to another level that is devoid of any riffs in vogue on the jazz scene. However, Carlton and Lukather do remain true to the song's original series of five scales, and each solos until they've completed the series. This is one awesome blowing date and is highly recommended for all true rock and fusion fans whether you were there or not. ~ Paula Edelstein
