Although Benny Carter gets first billing, three swing orchestras (all based in Los Angeles) are actually featured on this CD, which is comprised of music taken from Jubilee radio broadcasts of 1945-1946. The first six numbers are by Jimmy Mundy & the Jubilee All Stars, a part-time big band that includes altoist Willie Smith and tenor saxophonist Lucky Thompson. Mundy, who wrote four of the six numbers and arranged all six tunes, also takes a rare vocal on "Rhythm Was All I Had." Trumpeter/arranger Gerald Wilson's band is heard on three numbers, including extended versions of "Stardust" and "Out of This World." The remaining 11 selections are from a couple versions of Benny Carter's orchestra. Carter, who also provided the arrangements, is heard on alto and trumpet and his soloists included trombonist J.J. Johnson, trumpeter Emmett Berry, tenor saxophonist Bumps Myers, pianist Sonny White, and drummer Max Roach. Despite it being the mid-'40s, very little influence is heard from bop at this point, just little hints here and there, so this is very much a late-period swing set featuring three underrated orchestras. ~ Scott Yanow

They All Had Rhythm '45-'46 music CDs
$11.49 I first heard Winton Reynolds play in Austin, TX at an upscale jazz pub. Austin is known for its live performances, so it takes a lot for a newcomer to garner any notoriety. From the moment I walked in the door, Winton Reynolds commanded my attention. He was playing some jazz standards with some session players. Although I had heard all of the tunes before, Winton's rendering was as fresh and vibrant as the first time those songs were played in the Cotton Club or the Palace. Winton manages ...

They All Had Rhythm '45-'46 songs
$16.59 BORN ON THE ROADDuring the late 1970's and into the 1980's I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to lead my own 15 piece big band known as The Big Band Express. The musicians consisted of Berklee faculty, students and musicians from the Boston area that I worked with professionally. Most of the band members were alumni of the Buddy Rich, Woody Herman and Maynard Ferguson bands. We were extremely fortunate to have arrangements written by five of the most exciting big band arrangers of all time. The band performed numerous concerts in and around the Boston, New England area. The highlight of those years occurred on July 26,1985 when we performed opposite the Buddy Rich Band at the Danversport Yacht Club in Danvers Massachusetts. The concert was promoted as "Rich's Buddies", co-produced by Lennie Sogoloff and Joe Baptista, and hosted by Ron Della Chiesa. We played two sold out sets opposite Buddy's band with Buddy sitting in with us on both ...
