(4 Customer Reviews)
Though Buju Banton is an undisputed master of dancehall reggae, his vision is expansive enough that he's able to successfully explore other styles in a way that would seem unthinkable or impossible for virtually any other dancehall star. With his second album for the artist-friendly Anti label, FRIENDS FOR LIFE, Banton lets his muse run unfettered. Though there are enough dancehall-oriented tracks here to sate the faithful ("What Am I Gonna Do," "Get it On," "Paid Not Played"), it's fascinating to hear Banton venture into other areas. "All Will Be Fine" is a rootsy, acoustic tune featuring female choral vocals. The romantic "One to One" finds Banton stepping into Gregory Isaacs-like lovers' rock territory. There's even a ska excursion, as he takes on the old ska chestnut "Feeling Groovy" (not the Simon & Garfunkel hit).
2003 album from the 'Voice of Jamaica', guests include, Bounty Killer, Wayne Wonder, Beres Hammond, Fat Joe, & Nadine Sutherland. 19 tracks. VP Records.

Those who despair that reggae hasn't been the same since the passing of Bob Marley will rejoice when they listen to Buju Banton. Without sounding like an imitation, Banton seems to have derived the most of his stylistic inspiration from Marley. This is melodic reggae with an irresistible beat that's easily accessible to those who might not be hard-core reggae fans, without appearing watered-down or "commercialized."
Banton uses '90s technology to carry on Marley's positive-song tradition--there's electronic percussion, but it blends in seamlessly. His voice is a bit similar to Marley's, but is somewhat ...

Out on his own following the defection of Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh, this album saw Marley utilizing the talents of the I-Threes for the first time. There was still a nod to his past in the inclusion of a cover version of a Wailers tune, "Lively Up Yourself," but elsewhere he revelled in his new found freedom, on "Revolution" and most particularly, "No Woman, No Cry," which has practically become a Jamaican national anthem since its release. If that song had an instantly universal appeal, Rasta themes were also brilliantly conveyed via "Them Belly Full (But We Hungry)" and "Rebel Music (Three O'Clock Roadblock)." Marley had announced himself as one of the greats of modern music.
Natty Dread is Bob Marley's finest album, the ultimate reggae recording of all time. This was Marley's first album without former bandmates Peter Tosh and Bunny Livingston, and the first released as Bob Marley & the Wailers. The Wailers' rhythm section of bassist Aston "Family Man" Barrett and ...
