| | Pernice Brothers Nobody's Listening, Nobody's Watching CD (2005)
Debridement
$12.85 The Pernice Brothers spent much of 2004 on the road. With no new album in the foreseeable future, the band figured a live album would be a good way to keep the Pernice-loving masses satisfied, and they were right. Compiled from two shows recorded in January 2004 at New York City's Mercury Lounge, Nobody's Watching/Nobody's Listening is a stunningly recorded document of the group's live show. Joe Pernice's vocals are note-perfect and wringing with emotion; at one point he jokes to the crowd that he is giving himself an aneurysm. The band is tight, loud, and dynamic throughout -- all the things you want your power pop combos to be. A large number of the 12 songs come from the band's first album, Overcome By Happiness, and it is fascinating to hear the live band's slightly ...

Debridement
$10.79 In early 2005, young indie icon Conor Oberst (AKA Bright Eyes) unveiled two full-length albums--I'M WIDE AWAKE, IT'S MORNING and DIGITAL ASH IN A DIGITAL URN. Whereas the latter proved to be a departure into electronic music, the former sticks to Oberst's established ...

| | Bachman Turner Overdrive Best Of B.T.O. CD (1976) Remastered Hits
Debridement
$14.79 This nine-song collection released in 1976 was the first of close to two dozen "Best Of," "Greatest Hits," and "Greatest Hits Live" collections by the Guess Who's major competition when Randy Bachman left that venerable Canadian band. If you add "Free Wheelin'" (not included on this initial compilation), Bachman-Turner Overdrive equaled the seven hits the Guess Who had after Bachman bolted from them and they entered their "Hand Me Down World" phase. "Roll on Down the Highway" has a great riff, a sparkling neo-Led Zeppelin vamp, mutating "Black Dog" somewhat, slowed up and made commercial -- it's an almost forgotten rock & roll call to arms that doesn't get the airplay it deserves years later -- and it's the biggest hit they had that was not written by Randy Bachman. "Hey You," a reworking of the "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" chord changes and perhaps a dig at Burton Cummings in the same way that Lennon gave "How Do You Sleep?" to McCartney, clocks in at five seconds less than "Roll on Down the Highway," and is as equally forgotten years later, classics hits radio stations opting for B.T.O.'s first three hits for the narrow rotation that is that format. These songs are culled from the group's first five albums, 1973's Bachman Turner Overdrive debut up to 1975's Head On. They ruled the charts as a North American counterpart to the British Bad Company, whose first version charted during the same time period with almost the same amount of hits. Five of the nine songs were composed all or in part by Randy Bachman, including the song that didn't break the Top 40 but should have, "Looking Out for #1." Its "Girl From Ipanema" riff and majestic performance was touted by Mercury in the trades as their next number one, but for some inexplicable reason, it fizzled. This album has been re-mastered and refined over the years, but it is what it is, a compact collection of their hits released over a two-year period. ~ Joe Viglione
Best of B.T.O. (Remastered Hits) is essentially a remastered version of ...
| | Al Stewart Time Passages CD (1978) Remastered
Debridement
$8.39 Year of the Cat brought Al Stewart a genuine worldwide smash with its title track, and for its successor, he did make a few concessions. These, however, were slight -- just a slight increase of soft rock productions, an enhancement of the lushness that marked not only Year of the Cat but also Modern Times. These happened to be welcome adjustments to Stewart's sound, since they increased the dreamy continental elegance at the core of his work. And that's why Time Passages is the equal of Year of the Cat -- it may be more streamlined, ...
| | Urgehal Goat Craft Torment CD (2005)
Debridement
$11.39 Apparently the Norwegian black metal scene has been fragmented and contaminated enough that when a veteran band like Urgehal releases a new album they have to advertise the brand. On the jewel box spine it states "Satanic Black Metal." And, as if that weren't enough, on the back of the booklet it claims "Norsk Satanisk Black Metal." Finally, the ever corpse-painted vocalist Trondr Nefas yowls at the beginning of the opening title track, ...
| | Bananarama My Direction CD (2005) (Import) Bonus DVD; Bonus Track; Japan
Debridement
$43.35 After the British dance-pop act Bananarama hit paydirt in the 1980s with a string of infectious chart hits, it seemed inevitable that they would fade into the background of pop history. That the group was still releasing records 20 years after their commercial peak is impressive enough, but even more impressive is that 2006's DRAMA has much of the same playful, exuberant punch of their early work. Though updated to keep pace with contemporary sounds, Bananarama's music still pulses with a Eurovision vibe designed for maximum dancefloor accessibility. The album also contains two new remixes of the band's hits "Venus" and "Really Saying Something."
Bananarama have had a hard road to travel since their classic years in the Stock, Aitken & Waterman camp when they were sure-thing hitmakers. Trends in pop music evolved and popular tastes shifted in other directions and the 'Rama, along with other artists, were left ...
