The groundbreaking Japanese electronic music trio Yellow Magic Orchestra initially caused few ripples of excitement when its debut album--complete with computer game bleeps and arch synthesizer renditions of faux-Oriental musical themes set to pointedly fake-sounding R&B rhythms--was released in 1978. The western music cognoscenti were still trying to accommodate the seismic artistic shifts of punk rock.
But in retrospect these purposefully plastic-sounding tracks, particularly the eastern cadences and synthetic funk of "Firecracker," the jazz-fusion of "Tong Poo," and the grinding, George Clinton-influenced "Simoon," foreshadow much of the European electronica-based dance music of the 1980s and '90s, including Depeche Mode, New Order, and the Human League. In addition, the band's fetish for the idiosyncratic sounds of popular computer games of the day demonstrates its perceptive realization that future listeners would one day view these seemingly insignificant sonic twitches as an important part of their formative years.

$13.15 This CD by the the British art-rocker also includes a video game.
TRES LUNAS is certainly deserving of a wide audience, and not only for the presence of vocalist Jude Sim (most notably on the pop standout "To Be Free") and Oldfield's guitar-synth approximation of saxophone on the opening "Misty." The melodies are more focused than on some of Oldfield's other albums, while his occasional ...

| | Autumn Defense Circles CD (2003)
Yellow Magic Orchestra CD music
$10.95 The Autumn Defense let down their guard on Circles, their second album, to reveal the blue-green beauty trembling beneath. Less ambitious and far more intuitive, it's a mellow stretch of earthy folk-pop, where horns and strings are used because they sound nice, not out of a self-appointed duty to past musical idols. Between John Stirratt's busy touring schedule with Wilco and Pat Sansone's multitude of production engagements, Circles exudes the ameliorative qualities of an escape record that was made during downtime, for downtime -- while mentally liberated from the pressures of the daily world, where the two writers could reflect upon the geyser of circles that is life. Sunny acoustics and vintage keys over lazy brushes set the character throughout Circles. "The Answer" rolls out a strata of guitars that suddenly reminds the listener of an old Gordon Lightfoot album, only to have the notion reinforced by the wave of strings and gentle background shakers that follow. "Some Kind of Fool" steals into brief moments of Pet Sound drama, with its bass-and-percussion breaks, but more often rides a '70s groove of vibes, Rhodes, and Bread-like guitar effects. Though comfortably stoic on their second album, the Autumn Defense maintain the charm of a perennial explorer, for whom Europe is still far away, and the California sun could still bring love back. ~ Lisa M. Smith

| | Mychael John Thomas Love Songs For The 21ST Century CD (2006)
Yellow Magic Orchestra songs
$13.89 Mychael began playing guitar at age eleven, and by age fourteen he was playing various club circuits all around the Southeast. At seventeen, he recorded and released his first album with his band, Felt, which consisted of friends from the North Alabama area. The album achieved regional success on the East coast, but the band dissolved after one tour.In 1978, Mychael signed with Tree Publishing (now Sony/ATV) as a staff writer, where he met producer Cliff Williamson. Together they produced one album for RCA Free Flight Records, titled Neon Dreams, which was released in 1979. This album also achieved moderate success and was the largest monetary deal in Nashville history at that time. The title song, "Neon Dreams," was a top ten hit in San Francisco for eight weeks, and "The Life Sonata," the first ever composition for Rock Guitar Orchestra, received a mention in Guitar Player magazine and still gets airplay in Japan and Europe. In 1980, Mychael moved back into the session scene. For the next seven years, he worked with various artists from New York to Nashville. He also worked at Opryland during that time writing, producing, and playing in the live rock music shows. He was a staff writer for Multimedia Entertainment (producers of Phil Donahue) and wrote the music for "The Great American Music Video," a children's special that aired on NBC.In 1987, Mychael committed his life to Jesus. He began a free tape and CD ministry specializing in Christian rock music. He worked in youth ministry for ten years, including two one-year stints as a youth and music minister. From 1988 to 2006 Mychael also worked as a private music teacher, including five years as a college instructor, teaching guitar and recording techniques. In 1997, he formed his own record label, THOMASTONE RECORDS, INC., and has since released several CDs of his own work.In 2006, Mychael added author to his list of credits. He authored a science fiction novel titled Freedom Fire, which includes complimentary music ...
