The trio hit their stride with second album Solid State Survivor, a brisk and confident set of synth-disco-pop that continues along the line drawn five years before by Kraftwerk. Fun-loving and breezy where Kraftwerk had been ponderous and statuesque, the album sets out YMO's template for electronic pop with less minimalism and a more varying use of synthesizer lines. The English lyrics, written by Chris Mosdell but sung by YMO themselves, make for hilarious listening especially on a cover of the Beatles' "Day Tripper." ~ John Bush
Japanese reissue of 1979 album. Sony. 2003.Q (3/04, p.118) - 3 stars out of 5 - "SOLID STATE SURVIVOR, their second release, crackles joyfully with the sort of techno-pop that laid the foundations for the Human League and Pet Shop Boys." Uncut (3/04, p.108) - 3 stars out of 5 - "YMO draw a more delicate palette of techno-watercolours than their Teutonic counterparts..." Mojo (Publisher) (3/04, p.115) - 3 stars out of 5 - "Kraftwerk could never have produced anything that rocked like the opening instrumental 'Technopolis'." Solid State Survivor album
$9.99 Black Eyed Peas, the hip-hop crossover juggernaut that propelled singer Fergie and producer Will.I.Am to superstardom, have, since 2003's ELEPHUNK, been audaciously plugging away at their bombastic but lighthearted style of rap-cum-dance pop--an effort that has translated to a run of successful chart-topping singles including "My Humps," "Pump It," and "Don't Phunk with My Heart." Eager to follow up on the platinum-selling success of 2005's MONKEY BUSINESS, Black Eyed Peas have returned ...

Solid State Survivor album
$11.29 From the slinky, sexy opener, "Best Damn Fool," to the blues history lesson of "Who's Gonna Fill Those Shoes," to the slow-burn closer "I Found Happiness," Guy doesn't seem to have mellowed with age. In fact, he wails and shreds here with as much passion as ever. Eric Clapton, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, and Robert Randolph all lend a hand, but Buddy is in charge here, much the way he has always been.
By the time SKIN DEEP was released in 2008, Buddy Guy was in ...
| | Temptations Ultimate Collection CD (1997)
Solid State Survivor CD music
$10.79 This is part of Motown Records' "The Ultimate Collection" series.
With the exception of Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, one would be hard pressed to name a Motown act who went through as many creative shifts as the Temptations. While Wonder's and Gaye's changes of direction were a product of their own creative rebellion against Berry Gordy's brilliant but often formulaic vision, the Temptations seemed to be the label's official "keeping up with the times" artists, starting out as interpreters of Smokey Robinson's silky-smooth sweet soul confections and going on to embrace rock guitars, work with members of Funkadelic, and be produced by Rick James, all while holding onto their trademark vocal style. The length and breadth of the Temptations' career would make it practically impossible for a single-disc career retrospective to be truly comprehensive, and The Ultimate Collection is missing a few essential tracks (most notably "Psychedelic Shack" and "Runaway Child, Running Wild"), while two latter-day hits, "Treat Her Like a Lady" and "Error of Our Ways," don't exactly bring this set to a triumphant conclusion. But if you're only going to own ...
| | J Geils Band J. Geils Band CD (1970)
Solid State Survivor music CDs
$9.09 If you were to compare the J. Geils Band's 1970 self-titled debut to their final album with singer Peter Wolf, 1981's FREEZE FRAME, you could easily be fooled into thinking they were two completely different bands. Although they'd later become best known for chart-storming pop-rock, the J. Geils Band started out as a straight-ahead blues-rock band, much like their mentors the Rolling Stones and their peers ZZ Top and Aerosmith.
J. Geils's debut has a fun, loose, and very ...
| | A-Ha East Of The Sun, West Of The Moon CD (1990)
Solid State Survivor songs
$10.49 A small surprise, too quickly destined for the cut-out bins considering the way their career finally went after Hunting High And Low. This is a nicely crafted collection of songs, performed and sung beautifully, with lots of echoes and suggestions tucked into the music. While not an album one can discuss at length, it's an album that's a pleasure to listen to and one that deserves a better reception than the one, unfortunately, that it seems to have gotten. ~ Steven McDonald

| | Conrad Herwig Hieroglyphica CD (2001)
Solid State Survivor album
$14.65 Conrad Herwig follows up Unseen Universe with another all-original set, this time paring down to a quartet. It's not common for a trombonist to lead a small-group session as the only horn, but Herwig, with his technical facility, expressiveness, and timbral range, is uniquely capable of doing so. The pianist on the date is Bill Charlap, who's been gaining a reputation as a traditionalist and a champion of standard tunes. What he does here with Herwig's expansive harmonies and forms makes clear that he's not so easily pigeonholed. ...
| | Thee Midniters Greatest CD (2003) Remastered
Solid State Survivor CD music
$14.35 Before the release of this 2003 compilation, the absence of a Thee Midniters CD collection was one of the most egregious omissions in the catalog of 1960s rock on compact disc. This 20-track anthology happily rectifies that situation, including everything from the fine 14-song 1983 Rhino LP Best of Thee Midniters, and adding half a dozen other worthy selections. All of the band's very best cuts are here, whether it's the soul covers ("Land of a Thousand Dances," "Sad Girl," "Giving Up on Love," "The Town I Live In," "It'll Never Be Over for Me"); raucous bluesy garage rock ("Whittier Blvd.," "Jump, Jive and Harmonize," "Love Special Delivery," "Empty Heart"); or tasty romantic soul-pop originals ("Dreaming Casually," "Making Ends Meet"). There are, too, a few songs that sample the unpredictable directions into which the group occasionally flew, like the ghostly cover of jazz singer Oscar Brown, Jr.'s "Brother Where Are You?" and the Latin jazz-rock fusion of "Chicano Power." Audio purists might regret that some surface noise can be heard as the music was mastered from the best vinyl sources possible, rather than the original tapes, but really the vinyl noise is very faint and not a significant hindrance. It's also too bad that enjoyable oddities-rarities from the Thee Midniters discography like the psychedelic "Breakfast on the Grass," the Spanish ballad "Tu ...

| | Amos Lee CD (2005)
Solid State Survivor songs
$11.59 There's no denying that Norah Jones's name is thrown around a lot regarding her labelmate Amos Lee's Blue Note debut. Lee gained renown through touring with her, and Jones and her band are heard lending a hand on the album. Other than a tendency to keep things on the quiet side, though, the comparisons pretty much stop there. Where Jones's piano-based music draws heavily from ...

Solid State Survivor music CDs
$21.09 RON BOOTS is part of the so-called third generation of electronic musicians. The first generation, in the early 1970's, consisted of the EM pioneers and the second generation emerged at the end of the 1970's/early 1980's which included their descendants. Ron was born on October 13th 1962 in Eindhoven. Nowadays, he still lives and works in the neighbourhood of his native town, in the village of Best. In the middle 1970's, Ron was introduced to electronic music through the album 'Timewind' by grandmaster Klaus Schulze. Ron was so overwhelmed by this style music that he decided he wanted ...
