Recorded live at Brixton Academy, London, England on December 8, 2001. Includes liner notes by Charles Marsh.

As live albums go, Hellalive is solid: a nice cross section of songs from Machine Head's four albums, a dense, guitar-centric mix (courtesy of famed metal producer Colin Richardson), and tight, energetic performances. This live set, recorded primarily at London's Brixton Academy in 2001, is adequately muscular, Robb Flynn unleashing his demons on venom-spewers "Take My Scars," "Ten Ton Hammer," and "The Blood, the Sweat, the Tears," with Dave McClain's thunder drums providing an unshakable foundation for the band's post-thrash power-groove riffs. ~ John Serba

As live albums go, Hellalive is solid: a nice cross section of songs from Machine Head's four albums, a dense, guitar-centric mix (courtesy of famed metal producer Colin Richardson), and tight, energetic performances. But Hellalive came at a time when Machine Head's vitality was ebbing; preceding studio record Supercharger was frontman/leader Robb Flynn's weakest songwriting effort, the band was faced with indifference from both the metal underground and mainstream rock audiences, and second guitarist Ahrue Luster had exited the band (two of the live tracks here feature six-stringer Phil Demmel, of Flynn's former thrash act Vio-Lence). This live set, recorded primarily at London's Brixton Academy in 2001, is adequately muscular, Flynn unleashing his demons on venom-spewers "Take My Scars," "Ten Ton Hammer," and "The Blood, the Sweat, the Tears," with Dave McClain's thunder drums providing an unshakable foundation for the band's post-thrash power-groove riffs. Still, the strength of Machine Head's early material makes latter-day cuts "The Burning Red," "Crashing Around You," and "American High" sound comparatively flaccid -- and while early Machine Head albums Burn My Eyes and The More Things Change were bona fide events in the metal underground, the band outclassing the likes of Pantera and Biohazard with exceptional riffs and songwriting, Hellalive offers little more than a ho-hum to anyone but the band's most devoted fans. ~ John Serba

Notorious One Man Orgy
Josh Freese Notorious One Man Orgy CDs  (2000)

Hellalive songs
CD $11.79  Audio Samples
This debut from drummer-to-the-'90s-rock-stars Josh Freese delivers so much massive guitar pop that just a couple of listens will be enough to hook music fans looking to fill a hole in their collection of good-time pop-punk. With titles like "Rock and Roll Chicken" and "Why Won't Left Eye Get With Me," Freese's light-hearted solo sentiment is in stark contrast to the drummer's more celebrated employers, A Perfect Circle and latter-day Guns 'n' Roses. Headier tracks "Ass Backwards" and "Caffeine and Vaseline," while just as catchy as Freese's campier material, don't approach the musician's quirky lyrical standard. Hardly enough to exercise listeners' aural shock absorbers, these bumps in the road have the impact of a crushed frisbee. With the support of a major label and more refined production, Freese could easily realize his lyrical potential, and join Phil Collins and the similarly influenced Dave Grohl in the improbably exclusive club of former drum sidemen turned outright pop stars. All career considerations aside, The Notorious One Man Orgy is a splendid romp that provides all the pop to both satisfy and surprise fans familiar with Freese's impressive punk, new wave, and metal discography. ~ Vincent Jeffries An instantly catchy collection of power-pop-punk tunes from THE VANDALS drummer Josh Freese, this record was originally recorded for the label owned by Stone Gossard (PEARL JAM's Guitarist). Stone folded the label recently and Kung Fu Records seized the opportunity. Despite being a person who many consider to be the "best drummer in the world," it is song writing, not drums that are the focus of Freese's solo work. For The Notorious One Many ...

CAPTAIN AND ME found the Doobie Brothers boasting three strong vocalists, two expert guitarists, and a brace of rhythmic drummers, refining a sound that crossed AM pop-rock, soul-tinged R&B, country-folk, jazzy gospel, and strong musicianship. The result burst the band into national prominence. Traces of Moby Grape, whom the group adored, can be heard in their vibrant harmonies and flowing hooklines, but THE CAPTAIN AND ME showed an act of singular purpose. The effervescent urgency propelling the percolating groover "Long Train Running" and the ...
