Johnny Cash's fourth project with producer Rick Rubin continues on the same path as many of their previous releases: Cash's warm and rumbling baritone over minimal production and gentle duets with some surprising guests. One of the things that sets American IV: The Man Comes Around apart from the others is Cash's song selections. The success he experienced with his pEntertainment Weekly (9/26/03, p.34) - "...Cash stares down death here, yet when the man comes around, you have little choice but to go....It's a blunt, unsentimental farewell from a man who made a life and art from never flinching." Johnny Cash American IV: The Man Comes Around Songs American IV: The Man Comes Around Music American IV: The Man Comes Around Music Review Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews a man on a white horse Knowing Johnny's heart really belonged to Jesus made me smile when I heard the first song - The man comes around. I can't wait to meet him there one day:-) It gave me strength and inspiration.
The rest of the album is filled with echoes of a lifetime of circumstances and personal convictions that fully utilise other artist's song writing skills so well. In short... I love it! Submitted by syrom (Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Genuine emotion in a wonderful record "The man comes round" is probably the best of Cash "American Recordings" for Rick Rubin. Because of the strength of his originals, and the deepth and personality of his covers. It´s not only music. It´s a complete musical experience. You are in front of a singer who is conscious of living the end of his life and puts in the music tons of emotion. His new version of "Give my love to Rose" is astonishing. As his covers of "In my life" or "Bridge over troubled water". The song which gives title to the album, "The man comes round", is intense and has the power of his best days. And "We´ll meet again" is an affecting theme sang in the company of his family and full of genuine emotion. A wonderful record. Submitted by vidal.arranz (Valladolid. Spain) Was This Review Helpful? Classic Cash In some of these songs, Johnny sounded his ancient age...but he wore it well! I mean, the man could roll out of bed and sing a gregorian chant, and I'd look for the cd...His songs cover loss & pain & I highly recommend this, even for those of you who aren't necessarily country fans, as he covers different ground on this "album"...Recommended!!! Moving Not much of a C&W fan but bought this anyway after hearing the first two songs on a rock station while in London soon after Mr Cash had passed on. If you want to hear why he is a legend and hear a legend sing to the angel of death without fear, remorse of hesitation, buy this album. From a C&W neophyte's perspective, this album elegantly showed me the how and why Mr Cash's influence transcends the music spectrum. A fitting finale. American IV: The Man Comes Around
$11.95 Buck Owens' career was in high enough gear by this point for this to be his third album for the year. The reason was simple- the hit status of the title track, which held the number one position on the country charts for six weeks. On this Sundazed release, the two bonus tracks feature instrumental versions of 'Don't Let Her Know' and the title track 'I Don't Care', both under the direction of Don Rich from the 1966 'Buck Owens Songbook' album. 1995.
