Recorded live in Cambridge, Massachussets, and Windber, Harrisburg, Pittsburgh and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
In 2001, trumpeter Mike Vax organized a road tour for a big band mostly comprised of Stan Kenton alumni. Some of the selections released on this album (taken from various live concerts from the tour) are straight from the Kenton book, but others are adaptations or more recent originals, and the solos in all cases are spontaneous rather than taken off records. With such fine players as trumpeter Steve Huffsteter, altoist Kim Richmond, pianist Liz Sesler-Beckman, baritonist Bruce Johnstone, altoist Kim Richmond, and Vax being among the many soloists, the band swings such numbers as "Speak Low," Bill Holman's famous arrangement of "Stompin' at the Savoy," "Theme and Variations," "MacArthur Park," and "Eager Beaver." Johnstone, Huffsteter, and especially Richmond contribute arrangements very much in the Kenton style to this worthy project. ~ Scott Yanow

Live On The Road album
$13.45 Mike Vax, who gained his initial recognition as lead trumpeter with the Stan Kenton Orchestra during part of the 1970s, has been heard in a wide variety of settings ever since but seems happiest when leading his own big band. Although inspired by Kenton and including a few of his later-period alumni, Vax's 15-horn, 19-piece ensemble does not sound ...
| | Bill Holman Band Live CD (2005)
Live On The Road CD music
$13.45 Although Bill Holman is one of the all-time great arrangers and the leader of a stirring big band in the Los Angeles area, this was his first recording as a leader in seven years. Performed at a Maynard Ferguson tribute convention/festival put on by Ken Poston, the music played by the Bill Holman Orchestra is a little more boppish than usual for a Holman set, particularly the romping "Zoot 'n' Al," a tribute to Zoot Sims and Al Cohn. However, Holman's arrangements are quite complex, full of surprises and full of excitement. ...

| | Chris Walden Big Band No Bounds CD (2006)
Live On The Road album
$13.85 The follow-up to a particularly successful debut album, No Bounds brings more of what could potentially be referred to as "contemporary" big band. Big band as a major force disappeared decades ago, and those playing now are almost entirely nostalgia-based groups playing the old standards. Chris Walden is one of a very few that has adapted the genre to fit some more contemporary ideas, and takes new directions with the large-scale format. Here, there's a mix of old and new pieces, some updated thoroughly, some hearkening back to the powerful ...
