A pivotal album for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, 1989's Mother's Milk turned the tide and transformed the band from underground funk-rocking rappers to mainstream bad boys with seemingly very little effort. Mother's Milk brought them to MTV, scored them a deal with Warner Brothers, and let both frontman Anthony Kiedis and the ubiquitous Flea get back out into a good groove following the death of co-founding member Hillel Slovak. With a new lineup coalescing around the remaining duo with new drummer Chad Smith and guitarist John Frusciante, and with producer Michael Beinhorn again behind the boards, the band took everything that The Uplift Mofo Party Plan hinted at, and brought it fully to bear for this new venture. If anyone doubted the pulsating power that leapt from the blistering opener, "Good Time Boys," it took only a few bars of the Red Hot Chili Peppers' outrageous, and brilliant, interpretation of the Stevie Wonder classic "Higher Ground" to prove that this new lineup was onto something special. Wrapping up with the aptly titled and truly punked-out "Punk Rock Classic" and the band's own punched-up tribute to "Magic Johnson," Mother's Milk was everything the band had hoped for, and a little more besides. Effortlessly going gold as "Knock Me Down" and "Taste the Pain" careened into the charts, the album not only set the stage for the band's Blood Sugar Sex Magic domination, it also proved that funk never died; it had just swapped skins. ~ Amy Hanson 1989's MOTHER'S MILK is the album that broke the Red Hot Chili Peppers out of college rock cultdom and into the rock mainstream. Despite suffering the loss of drummer Jack Irons and guitarist Hillel Slovak a year earlier (Irons left after Slovak suffered a fatal drug overdose), founding members Anthony Kiedis and Flea found exceptional replacements in Chad Smith and John Frusciante. The new members' excitement is clearly evident throughout MOTHER'S MILK, arguably the Chili Peppers' best album. Mother's Milk- 'Put Them On MTV' Indeed, long live the Chili Peppers! If they were immortalised by 'Blood Sugar Sex Magik' then 'Mother's Milk' was the penultimate stepping stone to that. Sure it isn't 'Blood Sugar Sex Magik' or 'Californication' but it does have some really good songs and that is why I've given it five stars (that and the fact that it is the Red Hot Chili Peppers we're dealing with here, people). Have you heard the beauty of 'Pretty Little Ditty' or the liveliness of 'Subway To Venus'. 'Knock Me Down' and 'Taste The Pain' are brilliant and whose ever idea it was to cover Stevie Wonder's 'Higher Ground' was a good one. If you get the 2003 Remastered edition then I would recommend you listen to 'Salute To Kareem (Demo)' as it is briliant. Great album. Submitted by Jose (Isla Playa, Spain) Was This Review Helpful? With this album, the Chili's finally got true popularity Altough it's not my fave album (Uplift is my fav), it's a great album. Flea's bass does it again and Kiedis' lyrics are about the most original theme ever... Newcomers Frusciante and Smith replaced the original two (Hillel died and Jack couldn't take it). These two fit in as well, because John was a Hillel-disciple and Chad is just one of the wildest drummers ever.
The energy on this album blast holes in the wall, with highlights Good Time Boys, Magic Johnson, Taste the Pain and the beauty of the instrumental Pretty Little Ditty. Submitted by Tony Hall (Amsterdam, Holland) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A great band....this cd is one heck of a ride! I was used to the newer sound of the RHCP when I bought this, so at first I found it, shall we say a bit shocking. Kiedis raps a mile a minute while flea beats his bass into submission. JOhn frusciante, who was amazingly 18 at the time of this record, plays with a very funky, dirty rock sound and of course, Chad smith is great with the drums. The whole cd has this super high energy feeling, the musicianship is very strong. I have slowly grown to really like this cd and some of the chilis best songs are found here..."Knock me down" "Higher Ground" "Taste the pain" and "Nobody weird like me" are definite highlights. The only reason I have given this cd a 4 star rating is because of the sometimes ackward lyrics and rapping..."Subway to Venus" has some pretty stupid lyrics and I could have done without the porn sounds in the middle of "Stone cold bush" I do like the oldschool chili rap style and for the most part it sounds fresh and energetic on Mothers milk, only occasionally becoming annoying. And yet for all the sillyness, it is still the music and strong musicians behind this album that shine through. "Pretty little ditty" is simply beatiful and "fire" is excellent, proving this band totally rocks live. This cd gives me a happy feeling because the music is interesting, fast past paced and just plain good for the most part-it is very creative, you wont find another band like the red hots...I would recomend any chili pepper fan to buy this cd, even if the only cd you own is By the way....this is definetly a highlight of their career..BUY IT NOW! Mother's Milk
$12.65 Digitally remastered reissue of the famed Irish band's classic sophomore album from 1985 that saw the band come into their own with classic tracks like "Dirty Old Town", "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" and more. Includes 6 great bonus tracks of rarities and b-sides.
This remastered rerelease of the iconic Irish band's 1985 record features classic songs such as "Dirty Old Town," "Jesse James," "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" and many more. CD contains 6 bonus tracks. RUM, SODOMY & THE LASH delivers on the brash promise of its predecessor, RED ROSES FOR ME, mixing the band's unique brand of traditional Irish instrumentation and composition with Shane MacGowan's timeless poetry. As the mythic introduction of the album's opener, "The Sickbed Of Cuchulainn" crashes into its heaving, breakneck-speed verse, RUM, SODOMY & THE LASH is a hurtling juggernaut of Celtic soul, fierce and unrelenting. Its lyrics are the very stuff of Irish song and story: cruelty, human suffering, poverty-- and more than a few whiskeys along the way. Produced by none other than Elvis Costello (who here met his future wife, bassist Cait O'Riordan), this album boasts a feel ...
