Alcohol & Rain album
$11.69 Vocalist John McDermott's fourth solo album Remembrance pays tribute to all the soldiers who served their country during wartime. With a Memorial Day theme, the collection features music from the WWI era to Vietnam, the veterans of whom he honors with his song "The Wall." In the tradition of his Danny Boy and Christmas Memories albums, Remembrance focuses on McDermott's expressive tenor and the emotions he conveys ...

| | Paint The Sky With Stars: The Best Of Enya CD (1997)
Alcohol & Rain music CDs
$15.89 Enya created a style whose wide open soundscapes were reminiscent of New Age, but more melodic, heavily based on the traditional Celtic music that formed much of her early singing career. This synthesis of styles proved marketable: the single "Orinoco Flow (Sail Away) was a global smash, underscoring the universality of her work. Its dramatic string arrangements and heavenly choir struck a chord which resounded across all cultural and musical boundaries. More hits followed: "Caribbean Blue" assimilated yet another cultural paradigm into Enya's style, bringing the exuberance of the tropics ...

| | Karan Casey Distant Shore CD (2003)
Alcohol & Rain CD music
$14.45 Having established herself as a marvelous traditional Irish singer, Karan Casey's decided to spread her wings and head into contemporary folk-pop. It's a good decision, as she proves to be just as adept and intimate a performer on modern material as the old songs. She's also an astute judge of songwriters, whether it's Billy Bragg's title track, a meditation on emigration, Tim O'Brien's "Another Day," or Ger Wolfe's excellent "The Curra Road." She keeps the feel loose throughout, almost like a session, but keeps herself front and center, never letting things stray too much out of focus. Her own singing is as understated as ever, letting less be a little more, giving a wonderful shine to something like "Distant Shore." There's also a very political element to her music, as she illustrates on "The Jute Mill Song" and her version of Ewan ...

| | Chico Hamilton Transfusion CD (1962)
Alcohol & Rain album
$12.09 The first four CDs released by Studio West, a subsidiary of V.S.O.P., are all taken from concise (around three minutes apiece) performances that were made to be used as part of the radio show "The Navy Swings." This particular release features performances by one of drummer Chico Hamilton's most stimulating groups, a quintet comprised of Charles Lloyd (on tenor, flute and alto), guitarist Gabor Szabo, trombonist George Bohanon, bassist Albert Stinson and the drummer/leader. Because the individual selections are briefer than usual, in many cases only one soloist is featured on each cut. But overall, there is plenty of solo space for Lloyd (very much playing in a Coltrane vein), Bohanon and Szabo. The mixture of seven standards with nine Lloyd originals works ...
| | Fred Wesley Wuda, Cuda, Shuda CD (2003)
Alcohol & Rain CD music
$13.89 Recorded during a European tour in the fall of 2002, Fred Wesley's Wuda Cuda Shuda is a typical collection of funk tunes from the trombone-playing bandleader who is a former member of James Brown's JB's and George Clinton's Parliament/Funkadelic. Anyone who has heard Wesley's horn work in those former associations will know what to expect here in music that retains the funky rhythms (courtesy of drummer Bruce Cox and bass player Michael Mondesir) in a somewhat more stripped-down form than they were heard in Wesley's earlier bands. This time, the focus is on the horns -- Wesley, saxophonist Ernie Fields Jr., and trumpeter Gary Winters -- and that gives the tracks an unfinished feel to those who are accustomed to thinking of the horns as one element in an overall arrangement to be topped off by the focus brought by a Brown or Clinton. Without such a star player, the sidemen shine, but they don't draw the spotlight like the absent leaders. This is especially noticeable when Wesley, Cox, or guitarist Reggie Ward takes ...
