Perfecting Loneliness finds Jets to Brazil continuing their trajectory from Jawbreaker to Orange Rhyming Dictionary to Four Cornered Night. With this outing, the band develops their folk-pop repertoire via a set of summer-tinged, bittersweet memories. With deeper instrumentation, undone piano melodies, and larger-than-life orchestration, Schwarzenbach and company manage to turn intimate observations into moments of transcendent grandeur -- and while the album might not sound exactly like Nick Drake, the effect is the same. It's an emotional journey for sure, as songs like "Psalm" drift into the territory reserved for the likes of James Taylor. But Jets to Brazil maintains just enough rock crunch to keep the album driving. It's not all gloomy and glum -- "Autumn Walker" and "William Tell Override" still seethe with the punk-pop power of Hüsker Dü and Sugar and a relentlessly optimistic groove. But the final song, "Rocket Boy," is the most ambitious, and it will leave listeners welling up with nostalgia and yearning. ~ Charles Spano

Commemorating the 25th anniversary of Elvis Presley's death, 30 #1 HITS presents a career-spanning serving of the King's chart-toppers.
Dating back to "Heartbreak Hotel" (which was inspired by a suicide note printed in the Miami Herald), most of these cuts have become indelibly etched into the fabric of pop culture and each has a unique story behind it. "Love Me Tender" has its origins in the Civil War ballad "Aura Lee," "It's Now Or Never" found Elvis Americanizing the Neapolitan ballad "O Sole Mio," and "Wooden Heart" ...

| | Josh Wink Profound Sounds Vol. 2 CDs (2003)
Perfecting Loneliness album
$15.59 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by Josh Wink.
Josh Wink wants to take the DJ mix to a new level, and with the second volume of his Profound Sounds series, he accomplishes a similar vision of technology-enhanced mixing as on Richie Hawtin's Closer to the Edit. For the recording of Profound Sounds, Vol. 2, Wink began with audio tracks he performed minimal tweaks on with computer editing, then loaded them into FinalScratch (the loop-based mixing software first used by Hawtin) and mixed them live -- with a little post-production mastering to complete the job. Of course, the means are interesting only for technophiles and fellow DJs; for listeners, the end is of primary importance, and fortunately, Wink succeeds there as well. The presence of a Swayzak track as an opener is evidence that Wink intends to ease listeners in with sounds from the chillout lounge, though his own production "Superfreak (Freak)" early on begins upping the energy level. Midway through, Wink hits peak hour with trance-state techno from Minimal Man (aka British vets Peter Ford and Ian Loveday) ...

| | Iggy And The Stooges Search & Destroy CD (2004) (Import) United Kingdom
Perfecting Loneliness songs
$15.25 SEARCH AND DESTROY contains alternate studio takes of early Iggy & The Stooges songs.
Although the Stooges only got around to issuing a total of three records during their short but colorful career, there is an overabundance of outtakes sets on the market -- most of which zero in on the Raw Power era. This material has been repackaged an insanely high number of times over the years, and in 1999, the Cleopatra label issued another similarly styled set, Search and Destroy (The Detroit Studio Out-Takes). The Stooges had penned quite a bit of material around this time, most of which apparently did not make it onto Raw Power -- most tracks were probably going to appear on a projected fourth album. But with the majority of its members sinking into drug addiction, the group was dropped from its label, and broke up in 1974. But tapes of tracks that were never properly recorded in the studio survived, and you get some of the better-known compositions here ("Open Up and Bleed," "Johanna," "Rubber Legs"), as well as several that are quite uncommon ("Till the End of the Night," "She Creatures of the Hollywood Hills"). Most of these songs are available elsewhere in slightly better-sounding versions, as all the renditions here are recorded at rehearsals on what sounds like a boom box (not professionally). Also, you'll find run-throughs of a few songs that did make it onto Raw Power -- "Search and Destroy," "Raw Power," "Gimme Danger," etc. If it's rare versions (and not prime sound quality) of Stooges outtakes that you're after, then Search and Destroy will do the trick. ~ Greg Prato
Iggy Pop & the Stooges post-Raw Power recordings have been released in so many different forms by so many different label, both legit and bootleg, that's it's nearly impossible to tell which collections are good ones. While it's far from perfect, Cleopatra's Search & Destroy: The Detroit Studio Out-Takes is one of the better collections, at least among those released on CD in the late '90s. The most frustrating thing about the collection is that it relies a little too heavily on reworkings of Raw Power material at the sake of unreleased songs. Then again, these versions, while not radically different, are so brutal and raw, that they're worth hearing by any dedicated Pop fan. Similarly, the unreleased songs are simply vicious, with "Rubber Legs," "Johanna," "Cock in My Pocket," "Born in a Trailer" and "She Creatures of the Hollywood Hills" standing as some of their greatest work. This music may not be as flat-out noisy and chaotic as Fun House, but in many ways, these unreleased sessions and outtakes are the nastiest music the Stooges ever cut -- primal three-chord rock & roll delivered by musical primates. But be forewarned: these aren't necessarily the best versions of these unreleased songs, simply because there was no official final take of any of the songs. Hardcore fans don't mind testing out the various discs, simply because ...
