Fourteen years in the making, this film is based upon a book of the same title that won the 1989 Rolling Stone / BMl "Ralph J. Gleason Music Book Award", STANDING IN THE SHADOWS OF MOTOWN was shot entirely in film, on location in Detroit throughout December of 2000 and January of 2001. This one hour and fifty-six minute documentary tells the Funk Brothers' saga through archival footage and still photos, narration, interviews, re-creation scenes, 20 Motown master tracks, and twelve new live performances of Motown classics with the Funk Brothers backing up Chaka Kahn, Ben Harper, Bootsy Collins, Montell Jordan, Meshell Ndegeocello, Joan Osborne, and Gerald Levert. Paul Justman's inspiring documentary pays tribute to one of the most influential, yet unrecognized, collection of musicians that has ever been assembled. The Funk Brothers played the background music on the seemingly endless string of Motown classics in the 1960s and 1970s, resulting in a resume that boasts more number one hits than The Beatles, the Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, and Elvis Presley combined. Shot on location in Detroit, STANDING IN THE SHADOWS OF MOTOWN reunites the surviving members as they reflect on the groups' storied past. Most celebrated is departed bassist James Jamerson, whose fiery presence and technical prowess was largely responsible for shaping the Funk Brothers' supremely distinct sound. In addition to interviews, as well as reenactments and archival footage, Justman gathers together the musicians for an unforgettable reunion concert. Featuring the vocal support of several contemporary artists, including Joan Osborne, Ben Harper, Chaka Kahn, Gerald Levert, and Bootsy Collins, the Funk Brothers prove that they haven't lost a beat. Based on the book by Allan "Dr. Licks" Slutsky, STANDING IN THE SHADOWS OF MOTOWN gives overdue credit to a group of unassuming musicians who quietly created one of popular music's most enduring and spectacular musical legacies. Standing In The Shadows Of Motown review
$9.69 The music scene of the 1970s was enriched by the sweet sounds of soul, with an incredible array of talented artists making the crossover into the mainstream thanks to some classic songs. Fortunately many of the great soul performers were extensively captured on camera, and this release represents some of the best live acts of the decade. An extensive trawl of the Sony archives has turned up some incredible gems, including Patti LaBelle storming her way through "Lady Marmalade;" An earth shaking rendition of "Disco Inferno" by Earl Young's Trammps; The laidback, reggae-tinged sounds of "Rock Your Baby" by George McRae; The inspirational "Ain't No Stopping Us Now" by McFadden and Whitehead, and many others. ...

Standing In The Shadows Of Motown DVD
$14.55 In the summer of 1970, a rock festival travelled across Canada by luxury train, stopping in Toronto, Calgary, and Winnipeg. Lured by the promise of a mobile party, Janis Joplin, the Grateful Dead, The Band, Buddy Guy, The Flying Burrito Brothers, and Ian & Sylvia signed on to the tour for a fraction of their usual fees. The performances and the stars' antics on the train were both filmed, only to be locked away for 25 years. The colorful and thrilling results, seen here for the first time, capture these artists at their loosest and most natural. Fans of Joplin and the Dead will find reason to rejoice in the playful footage of these icons enjoying each other's company on the train, as well as their blistering stage performances. The events are also put into context through new interviews with the surviving musicians, including Buddy Guy, the Grateful Dead's Bob Weir, and Mickey Hart, who speak frankly and humorously about the tour. Once buried in reputation by the era's other historic concert events such as Woodstock, or the Rolling Stones at Altamont--FESTIVAL EXPRESS is proof that a monumental live event in '60s ...
