Charles Stone III's crowd-pleasing drama spotlights the previously unheralded world of university marching bands--more specifically, the cutthroat world that energizes Southern black campuses. Devon Miles (Nick Cannon) is a Harlem teenager who receives a full scholarship to attend Atlanta A&T University based on his excellent percussion talents. However, making the transition from hip-hop street drumming to the drumline of the school's legendary marching band is more challenging than Miles expected. For one, the band director, Dr. Lee (Orlando Jones), is determined to reclaim the national championship using old-school tactics, even though his traditional beliefs appear to be leaving A&T in the dust. And then there is Sean (Leonard Roberts), the current drum leader, who is threatened by Devon's skills and frustrated by his fierce individuality. These antagonistic forces, as well as the addition of a cheerleading love interest (Zoe Saldana), combine to test Devon's previously unshakeable confidence. As the season builds toward the BET Big Southern Classic and a showdown with rival Morris Brown University, Devon must swallow his pride and learn to be a team player if he wants his band to win the championship. DRUMLINE proves that any subject can make for an invigorating work of entertainment, if handled properly. Theatrical Release Date: December 13, 2002

Drumline Movie Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) Made a great gift! My husband has tried to watch "Drumline" many times when it was broadcasted on television, but as always interrupted. I surprised him with the DVD and he sat to watch it right away. It was the first I had seen it, the musical performance is outstanding! Dotted "line" Another Cinderella (or is it "Rocky"?) story this time dealing w/ the world of college marching bands. A freshman student at A&T University gets a top spot in the percussion section of the school's band only to lose the spot because of his attitude & his inability to read sheet music. The story is so familiar, I could see the ending of the film while I was viewing the middle of it. The acting is so-so. It was hard for me to believe Orlando Jones as Dr. Lee because of his inconsistent resume of past film roles he has had (not to mention the nightmarish talk show he had on FX). The love story plot line brought the film to a sputter (Nick Cannon came across as one of the punk-ass Wayans bros., who couldn't pick up a dime let alone the female romantic lead of the film!). The big theme of this film is, drumroll please, ... reading is fundamental! The band action is amusing & interesting at best but, where the film is supposed to soar (i.e. any "Rocky" movie) it just coasts like a car going down a big hill. | | VH1 Divas Live 1998 DVD (1998)
Drumline review
$10.69 The American Heritage Dictionary defines diva as "an operatic prima donna." Well these six pop superstars don't sing opera, but they are certainly equipped with the beautiful, powerful voices of opera singers. In this VH1 special event, Gloria, Celine, Aretha, Shania, and Mariah (all of whom are so famous that last names are rendered obsolete) join together for a spectacular evening of singing. Songs include Mariah's "Make It Happen," Gloria's "Turn the Beat Around," Shania's "Man I Feel Like a Woman" and many, many more. There is even a special guest appearance by the great Carole King, who ...

Drumline DVD
$7.89 Cyndi Lauper was one of the bizarrely fashioned stars who defined the lighthearted, sometimes silly pop music of the 1980's. Launched by MTV when they were still a fledgling channel, Lauper provokes a nostalgia for the time when the cable network actually played some great music videos. Videos for hits like "She Bop," "Time After Time" and the now classic "Girls ...

Drumline movie DVD
$6.75 It is Christmas Eve for most of the Christian world, but when Craig (Ice Cube) and Day-Day (Mike Epps) are rudely awaken by a burglar in a Santa suit, it is definitely another FRIDAY in the ghetto. The phony Santa gets away with all the cousins' Christmas gifts and their overdue rent money after assaulting Craig with a paltry Christmas tree. Cops are called in and do little more than confiscate Craig and Day-Day's pot stash. Though the cousins may be used to such adversity in the 'hood, they have never before had to think about getting real jobs in order to pay the bills. This third installment in the hip-hop stoner series follows L.A.'s lovable losers through their first day as rent-a-cops at a South Central strip mall.
As each problem they encounter becomes more and more ridiculous, screenwriter and star Ice Cube and first-time director Mark Raboy have constructed an irreverent African-American holiday farce. The film builds to a fever pitch at a holiday party where nearly every character in the film shows up for a wild finale. The supporting cast delivers outrageously amusing portraits of ghetto stereotypes while composer John Murphy paces the film by deftly blending hip-hop with traditional film scoring.
Craig and Day-Day move back into the hood, where they ...

$9.79 Director Wayne Wang (THE JOY LUCK CLUB, SMOKE) updates the familiar Cinderella story in this charming romantic comedy. Jennifer Lopez stars as Marissa Ventura, a beautiful young woman who divides her time between her precocious son Ty (Tyler Posey) and her housekeeping duties at The Beresford, an upscale Manhattan hotel. When the boyish and affluent politician Christopher Marshall (Ralph Fiennes) shares an amusing elevator ride with Ty, he subsequently meets Marissa. As luck would have it, Marissa is mischievously sporting an exotic Dolce & Gabbana gown belonging to another Beresford tenant, and is mistaken by Christopher as a guest of the hotel. The two undeniably hit it off, but Marissa is unable to reveal her working-class secret, afraid of losing her job. Christopher is completely smitten and makes numerous attempts to locate her, despite the comedic fact she is often right under his nose. While the film is always lighthearted and fun, it does not shy away from foregrounding race and class issues, devoting ...
