TEMPTATION is an eight-track jazz release by the Steve Kuhn Trio, featuring "Temptation," "Dark Eyes," and "Django."
Steve Kuhn mixes standards and forgotten gems in these 2001 studio sessions with bassist Buster Williams and drummer Billy Drummond. Beginning with a tantalizing take of "Temptation" that has a slight Latin undercurrent, Kuhn finds new directions in these timeless pieces. "Dark Eyes" is another gem that has long fallen out of favor, though Kuhn's intricate workout demonstrates that there is plenty of life left in this decades-old warhorse. His treatment of Michel Legrand's "The Summer Knows" (written as theme music for the early-'70s film Summer of '42) is a bit jagged rather than the usual setting as a straight, slow, bittersweet ballad. John Lewis' "Django" has long been a favorite of jazz musicians, and the trio's elegant setting opens with an imaginative improvisation, slowly working into its well-known theme. Kuhn's sole original, "A Likely Story," is a driving post-bop vehicle that never runs out of steam. It's hard to go wrong by purchasing any Steve Kuhn CD, and this is among his best dates. ~ Ken Dryden

Diana Krall's first studio outing since she and husband Elvis Costello became the proud parents of twin boys, 2009's QUIET NIGHTS finds the jazz singer/pianist turning in a serene and pleasantly subdued set. Krall breezes through a few bossa nova standards, most notably "The Girl from Ipanema" (here gender-reversed to "The Boy...") and the title track (originally "Corcovado"), both penned by the legendary Antonio Carlos Jobim. QUIET NIGHTS isn't solely a Brazilian-themed outing, however, as Krall also spends plenty of time in the comfortable realm of the Great American Songbook, offering up elegant orchestral renditions of "I've Grown Accustomed to His Face" and the Bacharach/David gem "Walk On By" that benefit from her supremely smoky vocals and graceful delivery.

How a good-looking Jewish boy from Brooklyn discovered the secret of success in an updated form of mariachi music is perhaps beyond our scope. Then again, it might not be such a mystery after all. Aside from the obvious example of exotica, much easy listening depends upon more than a touch of ethnicity to maintain its musical roots. What Herb Alpert found in Mexican street bands was a previously untapped source of south-of-the-border melody and rhythm. With its unlikely combination of Alpert's cool Chet Baker-like trumpet and the blocky cadences of a marching band, the Tijuana Brass produced a lively, colorful mix that managed to appeal to hips and squares alike.
WHIPPED CREAM & OTHER DELIGHTS was Herb Albert's most successful album, helped--no doubt--by its highly provocative cover art. The tunes are mostly unknown originals or, in the case of Lieber & Stoller's "Love Potion #9," so transformed by the Tijuana "treatment" as to be almost unrecognizable. Special mention must go to guitarist John Pisano and marimba man Julius Wechter, both of whom round out the sharp corners of a potentially raucous sound.

Vaughn Nark's high-note theatrics on trumpet follow the path of Roy Eldridge, Dizzy Gillespie, Cat Anderson, and Jon Faddis, though he tries to keep it all in perspective, for the most part. This former Airmen of Note member is making a name for himself now. The contemporary setting of Nat Adderley's "Work Song" may not appeal to hard bop or soul-jazz fans, but his funky treatment manages to work. He mixes it up with alto saxophonist Pete Barrenbregge and trombonist Dave Steinmeyer (both of whom are former Airmen of Note directors) in a swinging treatment of "Lullaby of Broadway." Nark's warm vocals in "I've Got a Crush on You" prove to be an added bonus, backed by lush strings and the rhythm section. His subtle approach to Dizzy Gillespie's "Birks Works" is tantalizing, showcasing tenor saxophonist Peter Fraize's smoking solo.
