Pourcel is best-known for his jazzy string arrangements of pop hits as well as his lush easy listening arrangements and film scores. Initially, he studied classical violin at the Paris Conservatoire. Pourcel joined the French Fiddlers in the late '40s (a group of violinists that performed jazzy versions of classical numbers and pop tunes). He sold over 15 million records internationally by the early '70s. Pourcel continued to record easy listening albums and compose film scores throughout the '70s and into the '80s.

The two albums contained on this discount-priced two-fer each contain Percy Faith's arrangements of movie music of the 1960s. Born Free was originally titled The Academy Award Winner and Other Great Movie Themes when it appeared in the spring of 1967 because, while Faith had recorded all five of the 1966 Oscar nominees for best song on it, the LP was printed before the winner, "Born Free," had been announced. Windmills of Your Mind, in 1969, appeared after the Oscar ceremony, but it, too, featured all five of the year's nominees. Also included were themes that, while they might not have been "songs" in the Academy sense, were Oscar-worthy, such as "Somewhere My Love (Lara's Theme From 'Dr. Zhivago')," from Maurice Jarre's score, which won the 1965 original scoring award. You've got to figure that there's something to do with record contract machinations in Kate Campbell's curious decision to re-record 29 of the 33 songs on her second (Moonpie Dreams), third (Visions of Plenty), and fourth (Rosaryville) albums, all originally released on Compass Records, and instead issue them on two albums, this one and Sing Me Out, released on the same day, August 10, 2004, on Compadre Records, along with a reissue of her debut album, Songs From the Levee. The obvious thing to say is that if you own those earlier albums is you probably don't need this one, which features re-recordings of "Wrought Iron Fences," "Galaxie 500," "Tupelo's Too Far," "When Panthers Roamed in Arkansas," "Bud's Sea-Mint Boat," "See Rock City," and the title song from Moonpie Dreams; "Crazy in Alabama," "A Perfect World," "Bus 109," "Deep Tang," and the title song from Visions of Plenty; and "Porcelain Blue," "Rosa's Coronas," "Rosemary," "Look Away," and the title song from Rosaryville.
