The runaway train that is the string tribute hits the Rolling Stones this time, giving chamber group treatments to 11 hits from the World's Greatest Rock & Roll Band. In a way, it's rewarding to see popular music from the second half of the 20th century collide with the pop repertoire tradition of its first half -- the quintessential music of teen rebellion mellowing into a reconciliation with Montovani and Percy Faith. Most of the songs chosen work well as instrumentals, especially "As Tears Go By," which is unsurprising since it was originally a string-heavy song to begin with. "Emotional Rescue" is the only painful moment; as the lead violin scrapes through the melody it becomes apparent that this is one interpretation that shouldn't have gotten past the arrangers. Of course, as benign as it is, String Quartet Tribute to the Rolling Stones is sure to be divisive among the band's fan base. Some will write it off as crass commercialism pushing its nose in art, and others will see it as a refreshing take on a much-loved catalog of classic songs. ~ Wade Kergan

String Quartet Tribute To The Rolling Stones CD music
$21.29 Mick Jagger never achieved much commercial success with his solo material (certainly nothing that touched the hem of his work with the Rolling Stones), but across four solo albums and a number of singles and outtakes he managed to put together a respectable body of work. That work is well selected ...
| | Gil Scott-Heron Spirits CD (1994)
String Quartet Tribute To The Rolling Stones music CDs
$13.79 With Spirits, Gil Scott-Heron made a triumphant return to the studio after a 12-year absence. Though the politically charged R&B singer's voice had deteriorated, much of his soulfulness comes through. His songwriting is consistently excellent, and songs ranging from "Message to the Messengers" (which advises young rap artists to use their power wisely) to "Work for Peace" leave no doubt that his sociopolitical observations are as sharp as ever. One of the most riveting cuts is "The Other Side," an extended remake of his early-'70s ...
| | Aquamen Do The Alkeehol! (And Other Hits) CD (1999)
String Quartet Tribute To The Rolling Stones songs
$12.09 Although a surf band, it seems odd that this San Francisco sextet named themselves the Aquamen when even a cursory glance at their song titles suggests that, like W.C. Fields, they never touch the stuff. Rather like Man or Astroman?'s retro-futuristic schtick, these "legendary masters of surf intoxica" produce instrumental surf (theremin and odd sound effects are mixed in with the organ and heavily-reverbed guitars), with all of the songs named after different types of liquors and mixed drinks and liner notes about the joys of intoxication. It's like if Foster Brooks and Otis the Drunk joined the Surfaris. Actually, unlike on their earlier two albums (plus assorted singles and EPs), the Aquamen do branch out slightly from their dipsomaniacal monomania on 1999's Do the Alkeehol! (And Other Hits). Songs this time include the Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass-styled "Beans 'N Rice" (because what goes better with booze than burritos?), "Panty Raid" (because nothing says liquored-up fun like sexual harassment), and "Cuz Yo a Woman" (because apparently they're too drunk to either enunciate or use halfway decent grammar). But, as with any surf combo, the real question concerning the Aquamen is if they ...

| | Noel Harrison Life Is A Dream CD (2004)
String Quartet Tribute To The Rolling Stones CD music
$19.85 Because he's far better known in the U.S. as an actor than a singer, some might be disposed to view this 26-track compilation of Harrison's 1967-1970 recordings as celebrity vocal kitsch. It's not brilliant stuff, no, but it's far worthier (or at least more inoffensive) than many might suspect. First, Harrison did start off as a singer/guitarist long before making his name as an actor, so he did know something about singing a tune and facing the right way into a microphone. Second, ...
