Wilson Pickett's first Atlantic album, IN THE MIDNIGHT HOUR, is actually a collection of singles recorded between 1961 and '65 (the year of the record's release). Even on the earliest track, "I Found a Love"--recorded by the Falcons, Pickett's first group, which also featured star-to-be Eddie Floyd--the singer's fierce, gospel-influenced style seems fully formed. Two other singles by the Falcons are included here, as are the R&B hit "Don't Fight It," "I'm Gonna Cry" (co-penned by Don Covay), and numerous tracks with the Stax rhythm section (who helped craft some of the finest soul music of the '60s).
Pickett co-authored almost every song on the collection with a host of other songwriters. One such collaboration was with Stax session guitarist Steve Cropper, which yielded "I'm Not Tired," the aforementioned "Don't Fight It," and the magnificent title track. An all-time soul classic, "In the Midnight Hour" boasts a loping bass line, punchy horn charts, and fiery vocals that have been reverently replicated by thousands of bands. Pickett's original, however, stands untouched. Verging on the brilliance of his follow-up, THE EXCITING WILSON PICKETT, IN THE MIDNIGHT HOUR is an excellent sampler of this soulster's early work.

In the early '80s, many of the top metal acts of the past had either disbanded or soldiered on despite the loss of founding members. This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."

12 X 5 includes material recorded by the Stones at Chicago's Chess Studios (home to the band's idols Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf) on their first US tour. Though this document of the group's early R&B period kicks off with a couple of covers from unsurprising sources (Chuck Berry's "Around and Around,") Mick and Keith waste little time in displaying their own compositional acumen. The acoustic-based, bluesy "Good Times, Bad Times" harkens back to even earlier, more seminal Stones influences than Berry, as does the instrumental "2120 South Michigan Avenue," where the blues-obsessed Jagger's harp is featured a la his hero Little Walter.

Let's be frank--Wilson Pickett's voice could strip the chrome off a Buick. Gritty, raw, and capable of emphatic shrieks and woeful moans, Pickett's voice is, in some ways, the paragon of Southern soul style. More consistent and packed with hits than its predecessor, IN THE MIDNIGHT HOUR, THE EXCITING WILSON PICKETT showcases the man's formidable vocal talents to the point of near perfection.
Two Chris Kenner songs--the blazing, dance-floor-filling "Land of 1000 Dances" (a certified soul classic) and the sprightly groove-laden "Something You Got"-- kick off the set. Pickett co-wrote much of the material here with Stax staff member Steve Cropper, among others. The timeless "In the Midnight Hour" (presented here in its single version) and the mid-tempo jam "Ninety-Nine and a Half (Won't Do)" are two such collaborative highlights.
