Event is not your run-of-the-mill progressive metal band, especially when it comes to its studio albums. The band's third opus, Scratching at the Surface, pushes deeper again into the fusion of prog metal and modern rock idioms, pairing compressed harmony vocals and heavy riffs with atmospheric or droning guitars, electronic textures, and mood-enhancing studio wizardry. It would be easy for a group attempting such a style-bridging move to lose itself in pointlessly long tracks. Instead, Event has developed a talent for the punchy three-minute rocker. Scratching at the Surface packs 13 songs in under 50 minutes, each one of them a hard knocker. "Make Your Way" kicks things off with a strangely cut-up riff (it's stuttering, as if a connection were loose) -- a well-calculated moment of awkwardness. The middle of the album is particularly strong, with "Won't Come Loose," "Siren," and "Into the Fray" delivering highlights. The group is not as inventive and efficient in the lyrics department. Some topics ("Siren" for instance) have been beaten to death long ago. That said, this album will pleasantly puzzle and entertain fans of quirky prog metal in the vein of Ty Tabor's projects -- maybe even those still hooked on Faith No More's last two albums. ~ François Couture

Scratching At The Surface album
$11.05 TRAIN OF THOUGHT continues the legacy of the progressive metal legends, with all the requisite superhuman metallic musicianship that their fans have come to expect. This outing continues in the heavier mode that began with 2002's SIX DEGREES OF INNER TURBULENCE, reaching even further into darker, personal lyrical themes.
Guitars are the dominant expressive voice here, with keyboards scaled considerably back from the signature Dream Theater sound. Band members Mike Portnoy (drums) and John Petrucci (guitar) continue their do-it-yourself production approach, opting for recording venues on their native Long Island (much of the band's album work has taken place in upstate New York at Bear Tracks and Little Bear ...

Scratching At The Surface songs
$9.75 Considering their cinematic scope, it's fitting that the songs on DEADWING were actually inspired by a film script written by Porcupine Tree mastermind Steven Wilson. Not that this should come as any surprise to longtime fans who know the UK act's reputation for churning out epic progressive rock so sonically descriptive that it's practically visual.
Porcupine Tree creates works with complex structures that do not alienate or obscure the songs themselves, pieces that are dark and psychedelic without being sinister. On the 12-minute opening title track, weighty guitar riffs and spacious synths immediately recall Nine Inch Nails, but swooping melodic changes give way to ambient passages, making it plain that this is ...
| | Dream Theater Octavarium CD (2005)
Scratching At The Surface album
$10.59 As the sole major-label progressive-metal act, Dream Theater invariably set the standard as the flagship band of the genre. With the numerically themed OCTAVARIUM (including eight tracks signifying the band's eighth release) the shred-rock quintet continues to challenge themselves creatively. Opening track "The Root Of All Evil" picks up the thread that began with "The Glass Prison" (SIX DEGREES OF INNER TURBULENCE) and carried forward to "This Dying Soul" (TRAIN OF THOUGHT). Drummer Mike Portnoy's lyrics for these songs read like a set of deeply personal journal entries documenting his painful recovery experience, further disclosed ...
