Closed Captioned; Additional Footage; Bio/Filmographies; Soundtrack English; Soundtrack French; Director's Comments; Dolby Digital 5.1 Re Spike Lee's bracing adaptation of David Benioff's novel is a vibrant, vital motion picture. Edward Norton plays Monty Brogan, a harmless drug dealer who has 24 hours of freedom before serving a seven-year jail sentence. Nervous, confused, and terrified, Monty turns to his closest friends for support: Frank Slattery (Barry Pepper), a cocky stockbroker who resents Monty for throwing his life away; Jakob Elinsky (Philip Seymour Hoffman), a hapless high school teacher who is attracted to one of his students (Anna Paquin); and Monty's heartbroken father (Brian Cox), who blames himself for Monty's demise. And then there is Naturelle (Rosario Dawson), Monty's beautiful girlfriend, who may or may not be guilty of ratting Monty out to the cops. Monty spends his last day trying to ignore the inevitability of time, but everyone and everything only reminds him of the bleak, unpromising days that lay ahead.
With 25TH HOUR, Spike Lee revisits the fiery territory of 1989's DO THE RIGHT THING. Frustrated by Hollywood's cold shoulder toward the tragedy of September 11th, Lee attacks the subject with fervor, resulting in a film that brilliantly captures the mood and atmosphere in New York City in the months following the attack. The film features stellar contributions from composer Terence Blanchard, cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, and Lee's ensemble cast. Theatrical release: December 19, 2002 25th Hour Reviews: "...Lee's use of space expertly evokes the general air of a city bereft..."
-- Ryan Gilbey, Sight and Sound "...An impressive, affecting return to form from one of Hollywood's finest filmmakers..."
-- Daniel Webb, Total Film "...It produces a wrenching, dazzling succession of moods..."-- A. O. Scott, New York Times "...Undeniably beautiful..."
-- Glenn Kenny, Premiere "...The role plays right into Norton's gift for letting brainy anxiety detonate just beneath the surface of a scene....Lee, as he did in MALCOLM X and CLOCKERS, makes his hero's dread palpable..."
-- Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly "...25TH HOUR is a riveting, emotionally resonant New York drama....Edward Norton is dynamite..."

25th Hour Movie Review Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) Excellent A very entertaining movie. Submitted by jrmelton0603 (Dallas, TX, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Spike Lee at His Best The best of Spike! 25th Hour is an excellent study of people we are drawn to care about—as we learn who they are. I was intrigued by the musings of the protagonist who is facing a lengthy prison sentence. I found this movie to address the existential question: can one enjoy life while aware of its end? Great movie. Submitted by a reviewer (pleasanton, ca, usa) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Awesome I deduct a star for two things:
1. the Spike Lee Monologue early in the movie where Ed Norton's character stands in front of a mirror and delivers what I can only describe as a series of views that the writer wanted to get out there
2. the ending. Bizarrely handled, hopeful, dream-esque sequence that just seemed unecessary considering the overwhelming nihilism of the movie as a whole.
The performances are flawless. The story of a man's last day before going to prison is beautifully portrayed by Norton (surely the best actor of his generation), Hoffman (becoming well recognised as a great actor) and the underused and underrated Barry Pepper. A scene towards the end of the film involving the three of them is so powerful, harrowing and well-acted that is almost gives chills thinking about it now.
All three completely disappear into their characters; Norton's criminal, Pepper's high flying and high paid commodity trader with a screwed up life and Hoffman's troubled teacher are brought to life.
A great movie, but not an easy one to watch in places.

Touching, Frustrating and heartbreaking
Given the subject matter, this is a beautifully filmed movie turning on it's ear the premise of the good guy/bad guy idea.
The final scene is poetry. Submitted by 0000 (keth) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Academy Award(R)-nominee Edward Norton (Best Actor, 1999, AMERICAN HISTORY X) heads an amazing all-star cast in the critically acclaimed Spike Lee (SUMMER OF SAM, DO THE RIGHT THING) film 25th HOUR. In 24 short hours Monty Brogan (Norton) goes to prison for seven long years. Once a king of Manhattan, Monty is about to say good-bye to the life he knew -- a life that opened doors to New York's swankest clubs but also alienated him from the people closest to him. In his last day on the outside, Monty tries to reconnect with his father (Brian Cox, THE BOURNE IDENTITY), and gets together with two old friends, Jacob (Philip Seymour Hoffman, ALMOST FAMOUS) and Slaughtery (Barry Pepper, THE GREEN MILE). And then there's his girlfriend, Naturelle (Rosario Dawson, MEN IN BLACK 2), who might (or might not) have been the one who tipped off the cops. Monty's not sure of much these days, but with time running out, there are choices to be made as he struggles to redeem himself in the 25th hour.

$10.35 Following up their acclaimed debut, BEING JOHN MALKOVICH, screenwriter Charlie Kaufman and director Spike Jonze are back to metaphysical moviemaking with ADAPTATION. The film stars Nicolas Cage as both Charlie Kaufman himself and his fictionalized identical twin brother, Donald Kaufman. While the boisterous Donald freeloads off of his sibling and works on a serial-killer movie script, Charlie is tormented by both his own army of neuroses and his new project, adapting THE ORCHID THIEF by Susan Orlean into a screenplay. As Charlie struggles to shape the nonfiction novel into a film, he begins writing himself into the story of Orlean (Meryl Streep), a sad-eyed journalist, and her subject, renegade Florida flower expert John Laroche (Chris Cooper). The resulting tale extends far beyond the scope of the book, stretching from Hollywood to New York to...Hollywood four billion years ago.
Equally as inventive as BEING JOHN MALKOVICH, ADAPTATION revels in its gloriously ...

$10.29 James Clayton is fired up. A bartender by night and computer hacker in the few hours of daylight for which he manages to leave his water bed, the kid is flying high, on a roll with a laid-back lifestyle that suits him just fine. Played by an agile Colin Farrell, Clayton is also a heartthrob with his five o'clock shadow and chiseled pecks. A cushy job offer from Dell computers peaks his interest in securing a professional career, and at the same moment he meets Walter Burke (Al Pacino), a recruiter from the CIA. Though Clayton's better judgement tells him to stay away from the shady Burke, he is curious to learn whatever he can about his father, who was also a CIA agent, killed in the line of duty. Clayton is sent to an intensive CIA training camp called "The Farm," where he quickly learns the gravity of his decision as he undergoes gruelling tests of physical, mental, and psychological strength. His romantic interest in the gorgeous, tough-as-nails Layla (Bridget Moynahan), a fellow trainee, becomes a weakness as the pressure of the tests steadily increases. Finally, without warning, Clayton is thrown ...

$10.35 Director Martin Scorsese revisits New York City's notorious past with this dazzling historical drama. A throwback to the epics of yesteryear, GANGS OF NEW YORK is set in the mid-1800s, when the streets of lower Manhattan were teeming with tension and violence. Leonardo DiCaprio is Amsterdam Vallon, the son of a revered gang leader (Liam Neeson). As a youth, Amsterdam witnessed the death of his father at the hands of William "The Butcher" Cutting (Daniel Day-Lewis), the maniacally driven ruler of the city's most powerful gang. Sixteen years later, Amsterdam is finally released from the orphanage that raised ...

$23.45 Co-helmed by WALL-E director Andrew Stanton, FINDING NEMO follows Marlin (voiced by Albert Brooks), an overprotective clown fish father, as he desperately searches the farthest reaches of the sea for his missing son Nemo. Marlin's journey leads him beyond the Great Barrier Reef into deeper and darker waters, where he meets Dory (Ellen DeGeneres), a forgetful yet optimistic blue tang, and a number of not-so-friendly--and often very hungry--aquatic creatures. Meanwhile, little Nemo finds himself in a dentist's fish tank in Syndey, Australia, along with other underwater captives, including Gill (Willem Dafoe), the group's scarred Moorish idol leader. As Nemo works with his new friends on a plan to escape their tank, Marlin and Dory swim closer, but they'll need more than just fins to get into the dentist's office.
This fifth computer-animated outing by Pixar continues the company's remarkable winning streak that began with TOY STORY. Like other Pixar films, FINDING NEMO features a story with ...
