$16.95 Recorded in 1982. Originally released on Columbia (JS 38325). Includes liner notes by Maury Yeston, Mike Berniker.
This is part of Columbia Records "Broadway Masterworks" series.
NINE was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.
The 1981-82 Broadway season boasted two solid musical hits: Dreamgirls, about a Supremes-like girl group, and Nine, based on Federico Fellini's celebrated film 81/2. When Tony Awards time arrived, the conservative theater types who make up the Tony voters gave Nine five awards, for best musical, score, director, featured actress, and costume designer, while Dreamgirls won six, for best book, choreographer, actor, actress, supporting actor, and lighting designer. This Solomon-like division sent the message that Dreamgirls was in essence a performance vehicle, while Nine was the more solid overall work. In retrospect, it seems that the Tony voters got it exactly backward. They may have been skittish about the pop/R&B pastiche that made up Henry Krieger and Tom Eyen's score for Dreamgirls and more comfortable with Maury Yeston's more traditional Broadway score for Nine, but the former has proven more memorable in the long run. (It was also the more popular at the time, with a cast album that went gold, produced a Top 40 hit, and won the Grammy, while Nine never reached the charts.) And though both shows had healthy runs, Dreamgirls ran more than twice as long. Actually, the strong points of Nine have more to do with the cast, led by Raul Julia as a confused Italian film ...

Art Of Pilar Lorengar
$9.55 DRG Records continues to comb through the Columbia Records vaults for children's material, and this reissue combines two delightful works featuring musical theater performers that first saw release in the 1950s. Don Marquis wrote a series of fanciful stories supposedly recited by a cockroach who typed them on a typewriter by jumping from key to key. The cockroach was named archy, and he was obsessed with a cat named mehitabel (he couldn't be expected to capitalize anything, under the circumstances). Joe Darion (later the lyricist of Man of La Mancha) and composer George Kleinsinger adapted the stories into the musical recitation "archy and mehitabel," narrated by actor David Wayne, with Broadway star Carol Channing playing mehitabel and film star Eddie Bracken as archy; "echoes of archy" added some more stories. Archy is something of a philosopher, and he is always trying to rehabilitate mehitabel, an alley cat who acts like one. The performers had fun with the material, which in 1957 was adapted into a Broadway musical, Shinbone Alley, featuring Bracken. DRG has filled out the reissue to CD length by adding a version of French composer Camille Saint-Saëns' wonderful suite "Le Carnaval des Animaux," played by Andre ...

With ears firmly on the pulse of the collector and hardcore enthusiast, the German-based Bear Family Records has gathered seven CDs worth of material from lyricist, vocalist and spoken word artist Rod McKuen's mid- to late-'60s stint on RCA Records. The albums covered on If You Go Away: The RCA Years 1965 -- 1970 (2007) are Rod McKuen Sings His Own (1965), The Loner (1966), Other Kids of Songs (1966), Through European Windows (1967), Listen to the Warm (1967), and The Single Man (1968) -- all of which had largely been out of print in North America for decades at the time of this box set's release. However that is a mere fraction of the contents as there is an overwhelming 111 -- of the 195 selections -- that have never been available before. That category would include a host of McKuen's demos -- that were meant not only for himself but for other artists -- alternate takes and unissued ...
