Swimmer movie Customer Reviews
Swimmer film Aging businessman Ned Merrill, played by Burt Lancaster, decides to take a swimming tour of his Fairfield County, Connecticut neighbors' pools. As he does so we learn about him, his history, and his relationships with others, and the shallow, illusory nature of the American Dream he has pursued. Writer Eleanor Perry adapted the John Cheever short story for the screen and her then husband Frank Perry directed it. The production was somewhat troubled and Perry resigned before completion and was replaced by Sidney Pollack. Considered a failure and even a "disaster" upon its 1968 release it was little publicized and was quickly forgotten but has since gained the admiration and respect of a small group of movie watchers, critics, and commentators. It owes something to the European "art film" genres of the 1960s with its symbolism and and somewhat childish (although we thought terribly sophisticated and world-weary at the time) melancholy with regard to human aspiration. Visually and in approach and comment it now tells us much about the attitudes and actions of that decade which was a trial to live through but in retrospect seems hopelessly innocent and naive. If you enjoyed the Perrys' classic David and Lisa you will like this one. If you like a film you can consider and discuss it is for you. If you desire a fascinating plot, romance, adventure,and "street smarts" please look elsewhere. Well-acted with some interesting cameos by familiar 60s - 80s media personalities including original story author Cheever himself.

||Stunning transfer of this classic!|
"The Swimmer" is a unique film- the only one of it's kind & with Burt Lancaster in a very different & unusual role compared to his typical performances. But he did it very well, being one of the world's greatest actors. The PQ & sound are fantastic- better than some Criterion blu-ray's even! Most exemplary quality for a blu-ray. And being in England, I was pleased as ever to get it at a fair price from CD Universe (the best online price), making the value just below the UK customs limit! Phew. Don't miss this lovely blu-ray!
