| | Louis Armstrong Jazz Masters CD Louis Armstrong Discography of CDs
Reprising most of a concert that later appeared on Laserlight as On the Road, Jazz Masters: Louis Armstrong isn't the artist introduction it appears to be. While still consisting of a great performance -- including "Mack the Knife," "High Society," and "Baby, It's Cold Outside" in a duet with Velma Middleton -- the collection has virtually nothing to recommend to any but the most fanatical Louis Armstrong fans. ~ John Bush
Personnel: Louis Armstrong (vocals, trumpet); Trummy Young (vocals, trombone); Velma Middleton (vocals); Edmond Hall (clarinet); Barrett Deems (drums).
Liner Note Author: Dave Caughren.

| | Vince Guaraldi Charlie Brown Christmas CD (1977)
Jazz Masters music CDs
$14.19 The fourth of four CD reissues taken from Art Pepper's three nights at the Village Vanguard in July 1977, as with the other releases, adds one selection ("Scrapple from the Apple") to the music of the original LP; all of the performances on this and the other sets have since been made available as part of a massive nine-CD box set. The great altoist was clearly excited to be playing at the famous New York club, and his rhythm section -- pianist George Cables, bassist George Mraz and drummer Elvin Jones -- consistently stimulates his imagination. This release has more variety than usual, for in addition to his alto playing (including a memorable unaccompanied solo on "Over the Rainbow"), Pepper switches to clarinet for the lengthy "More for Les" and interprets the ballad "These Foolish Things" on tenor. The nine-CD set is essential for Art Pepper fanatics, but those just wanting a taste of the great altoist's talents will be satisfied with this release. ~ Scott Yanow

$9.59 | | Miles Davis In A Silent Way CD (1969) Remastered; Deluxe Edition
Jazz Masters album
$6.75 John McLaughlin (electric guitar); Dave Holland (bass); Tony Williams (drums).
With IN A SILENT WAY, the elements of popular music, blues and electronics that had been implicit in Miles Davis' previous recordings now came center stage, and the trumpeter never looked back again. IN A SILENT WAY is Miles' BIRTH OF THE COOL/MILES AHEAD/KIND OF BLUE for the rock generation.
Gone are the rhythmic and harmonic trappings of bebop. In their place, Miles conjures a hypnotic, subliminal dance pulse and an airy, celestial drone of electric keyboards. Miles fell in love with the bell tones and flute-like textures of Fender/Rhodes electric pianos, and in the hands of Herbie ...

| | Alice Coltrane Monastic Trio CD (1968)
Jazz Masters music CDs
$12.65 Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Erick Labson (MCA Studios).
Alice Coltrane's 1968 solo debut on Impulse still stands tall in the artist's excellent discography. Alice had already gained a considerable education playing in the band of her late husband John Coltrane during one of his boldest and most exploratory periods. The searching quality underpinning the saxophonist's last albums is also present on A MONASTIC TRIO, as are the Eastern modalities, and the balance between density and expansiveness often associated with Trane.
But to consider Alice Coltrane's debut a mere offshoot of her late husband's inventions is to do her a great disservice. Coltrane distinguishes herself as a composer (all the tunes on the album are hers), and as an instrumentalist (her harp playing, in particular, is noteworthy). A MONASTIC TRIO also benefits from a superb personnel list, including Rashied Ali on drums, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and the irrepressible Pharoah Sanders on saxophone, flute, and bass clarinet. This recording remains ...
| | Russell Gunn Love Requiem CD (1999)
Jazz Masters songs
$13.85 Trumpeter Russell Gunn remembers the breakup of a love affair on this CD, a nine-part suite. His writing recalls Booker Little a bit, while his trumpet playing is closer to Freddie Hubbard's. The first part of the suite is reasonably happy ("In the Beginning: Love") and then, in sections with titles such as "Deceit," "Psychosis" and "Torment," the music gets rather stormy and downbeat. The final part, "Acceptance," finds him finally coming to terms with the relationship's end. Fortunately, the music itself is not overly gloomy, with heated and sometimes intense soloing from altoist Myron Walden, tenor-saxophonist Mark Turner ...
