Starring Geena Davis, James Gandolfini, Philip Bosco, Stephen Rea, Aida Turturro
Director Martha Coolidge
Closed Captioned; Soundtrack English

In Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, a woman does what she's expected to--especially if she's expecting. Angie (Geena Davis) is just a little too independent for that, and when her long-time boyfriend gets her pregnant she decides to do things entirely her own way, shocking everyone in this often comedic look at one woman's search for self. This heartwarming story is based on the novel ANGIE, I SAYS by Avra Wing.

Angie (Geena Davis), a spunky, hardworking Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, native, is about to make some life-altering decisions. When she discovers she's pregnant, Angie starts making wedding plans, only to realize the father of her child, and long-term fiancé, Vinnie (James Gandolfini of THE SOPRANOS), is not the man she wants to marry. Handsome and cultivated Noel (Stephen Rea) arrives on the scene, and the charming Irishman sweeps her off her feet, leading to a tumultuous affair, much to the displeasure of Angie's father, stepmother, and Bensonhurst friends. Having a child prompts Angie to analyze her own childhood as well as her relationship with her mother. This appealing tale of self-discovery is based on the novel ANGIE, I SAYS by Avra Wing.

Apparently Madonna was up for the role of Angie and was dismissed in favor of Geena Davis. The rumor is that Madonna therefore wrote an angry, sarcastic letter on this topic to Disney, and producer Joe Roth, claiming she had initiated the project with writer Todd Graff. Disney maintained that Madonna, attached from the beginning, had opted to do the film SNAKE EYES (aka DANGEROUS GAME) instead. James Gandolfini (Vinnie) and Aida Turturro (Tina) played brother and sister on the HBO series THE SOPRANOS.

I thought it was quite funny at the beginning, but then it lost it somehow. The film turned into a drama and became quite boring.

Small-town mechanic Benny (Aidan Quinn, LEGENDS OF THE FALL) is perhaps a tad overprotective of his mentally ill artist sister, Juniper "Joon" Pearl (Mary Stuart Masterson of FRIED GREEN TOMATOES), but that's only because he's completely devoted to her well-being. When Benny loses a poker game and is forced to take in a friend's eccentric houseguest--a droll, dyslexic oddball (Johnny Depp) who goes by the name of Sam and models himself after silent-film star Buster Keaton--Joon finds herself falling into a romance unbeknownst to her brother. Benny does eventually find out, though, and both siblings must come to terms with their changing relationship. BENNY & JOON, a must-see for Depp fans, is chockful of whimsy and affection. This charming romantic comedy co-stars Julianne Moore and William H. Macy in early film roles. Morton (Gabriele Ferzetti), the power-hungry owner of a railroad company, hires Frank (Henry Fonda, playing against type), a gunfighter without a conscience, to kill anyone who stands in the way of the completion of the railroad. After Frank murders land owner Brett McBain (Frank Wolff), McBain's widow (Claudia Cardinale) hires two killers of her own to protect her and gain revenge: a mysterious, harmonica-playing desperado (Charles Bronson) and his rogue sidekick (Jason Robards). Using techniques previously unseen in the genre, Sergio Leone utilizes close-ups, color, and Ennio Morricone's trademark score to create a tense and somber meditation on death which is widely considered to be one of the best westerns in cinematic history. Soon-to-be legendary Italian directors Dario Argento (SUSPIRIA) and Bernardo Bertolucci (THE LAST EMPEROR) collaborated with Leone on the screenplay. Shelby Lynne Identity Crisis CD  (2003)

CD $11.69  4.5 stars Audio Samples
An IDENTITY CRISIS for Shelby Lynne is no big surprise, considering that she began her career as the jazziest singer in Nashville, with predictably uncommercial results. Her previous two albums found Lynne making her bid for Sheryl Crow/Shawn Colvin-style pop stardom with big production and pop-rock aesthetics. This time around, she's producing herself, and the arrangements tend toward the opposite extreme; a bare-bones format with the rhythm section working around Lynne's voice and her (mostly acoustic) guitar. Whether Lynne is reclaiming her own identity or simply working with a smaller budget in the wake of disappointing sales figures, the change is a welcome one. The songs feel earthier, rootsier, and much closer to Lynne's heart, allowing her impressive voice to wring out all the inherent soul. Whether or not it's her ticket to stardom, IDENTITY CRISIS is one of Lynne's most personal and artistically successful statements. Recorded at Cherokee Studios, Hollywood, California. Personnel: Shelby Lynne (vocals, guitar); Maxine Willard Waters, Oren Waters (vocals); Bill Payne (piano, Fender Rhodes piano, Wurlitzer organ); Larry Antonino, Jon Button (upright bass); Kevin Ricard (percussion). Audio Mixer: Bruce Robb. Recording information: Cherokee Studios, Hollywood, CA. Photographer: Phil Poynter. Personnel: Shelby Lynne (vocals, guitar); Bill Payne (piano, Wurlitzer piano, Fender Rhodes piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Larry Antonio, John Button (upright bass); Kevin Ricard (percussion); Maxin Waters, Oren waters (background vocals).
Friends - The Complete First Season
Friends - The Complete First Season DVDs  (1994)

Angie review
DVD $25.79  5 stars
In addition to scoring one of the biggest surprise hits in television history, NBC generated a veritable pop culture phenomenon with its twentysomething sitcom smash FRIENDS. Set in New York City, the series chronicled the lives of six best friends as they navigated through the ups and downs of romance and career from the confines of their local coffee shop and some pretty fabulous Manhattan apartments. While the series originally rode to success on the coattails of its Thursday night predecessor SEINFELD, what differentiated FRIENDS from the rash of copycat sitcoms that followed--and made it a bona fide hit in its own right--was the unique chemistry of its fine ensemble cast: Courtney Cox as neurotic clean freak Monica; David Schwimmer as her endearingly hangdog brother Ross; Matt LeBlanc as none-too-bright actor-wannabe Joey Tribbiani; Matthew Perry as sarcastic computer programmer Chandler Bing; Lisa Kudrow as goofy new-age free spirit Phoebe Buffay; and, of course, Jennifer Aniston as reformed spoiled rich girl Rachel Green (whose highly influential fashion sense launched a thousand hairstyles). This collection includes every episode from the popular series' debut season, which featured guest appearances by George Clooney and Noah Wylie.
