Closed Captioned; Standard Screen; Additional Footage; Soundtrack English; Soundtrack Spanish; English Subtitles; Director's Comments Classic film about a detective who, while investigating the murder of a beautiful woman, falls in love with her likeness in a painting. But was the woman really murdered? A classic noirish mystery with a consummate ensemble of actors. Dana Andrews adroitly plays the detective who delves into the murder of the stunningly beautiful Laura, with whom it seems everyone, including the detective himself, is in love. But Webb steals the show as the titular ingenue's creepily elegant social mentor, Waldo Lydecker. Based on the novel by Vera Caspary. Academy Award Nominations: 4, including Best Director. Academy Awards: Best (Black-and-White) Cinematography. LAURA was added to the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 1999.
Additional cast: Clyde Fillmore (Bullitt); Ralph Dunn (Fred Callahan); Lee Tung Foo (Servant); and Harold Schlickenmayer, Harry Strang and Lane Chandler (Detectives). Laura Reviews: "...That LAURA continues to weave a spell -- and it does -- is a tribute to style over sanity....The music lends a haunted, nostalgic, regretful cast to everything it plays under..."
-- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times ...This all-timer made a standard of the title tune, launched co-star Clifton Webb's screen career....[and] it also gives Vincent Price and Judith Anderson meaty suspect roles..."
-- Mike Clark, USA Today "[T]he whodunit still gleams like a pearl-handled pistol..."
-- Edward Karam, Entertainment Weekly "[A] delectable romantic thriller..."-- Susan King, Los Angeles Times "Preminger's waspish masterpiece, which swings from high society noir to romantic mystery two thirds of the way through."
-- Kate Stables, Sight and Sound

Absolute classic It's gret to have this movie on DVD. Dana Andrews plays a detective who falls in love with portrait of murdered woman. Film has many plot twists and it keeps you guessing all the way. Gene Tierney is devastatingly beautiful as Laura. Looking at this movie one could argue she was the most beautiful woman in movies. DVD also includes a great A&E Biography on Genet Tierney (a sad tale) and on Vincent Price. This is a must get for classic movie fans. Classy It can be argued if this film is overrated, but the dialogue is far above anything offered today, the black and white shots look as crisp as if they were shot yesterday, and the film has both humor and suspense. Gene Tierney is pure class, Clifton Webb is absolutely wicked, Judith Anderson is imperious, and Vincent Price charms as the broke playboy from Kentucky. With those four stars in one film, how can you go wrong? Submitted by tintin84105 (Woods Cross, UT, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$9.69 Joseph L. Mankiewicz's bittersweet, sparkling romance between a young widow and a sea captain's ghost weaves a magical tale of immortal love. Determined to live her life the way she wants, newly widowed Lucy Muir (Gene Tierney) declines her straitlaced in-laws' demand that she live with them and moves with her daughter (a young Natalie Wood) to the seaside into a cottage haunted by the handsome, blustering Captain Gregg (Rex Harrison). A deal is struck between the two in the wee hours of the morning allowing Lucy to stay in the house and the captain to materialize only in the master bedroom. As they gradually get to know each other better, Lucy's spunk and stubbornness gains first the captain's grudging respect, then his heart. But when another man woos Lucy, both must face that her future lies with the living, not in the spirit world.
A timeless romantic favorite, THE GHOST AND MRS. MUIR subtly traces the complex development of friendship and love, themes that director Mankiewicz excels with in films such as A LETTER TO THREE WIVES and ALL ABOUT EVE, projecting a keen understanding of the tangled emotions and motives that compel people toward their fates. The film is based on the novel by R.A. Dick and scored by Bernard Herrmann.

$10.49 In this vintage film noir, crime-rag publisher Earl Janoth (Charles Laughton) tries to tag his editor George Stroud (Ray Milland) with the savage murder of the publisher's mistress when he glimpses the editor skulking out of her apartment. The twist to an otherwise familiar tale is that Janoth assigns Stroud to find the killer, even as the clues start pointing right at the editor himself. Based on Kenneth Fearing's novel, the film was remade in 1987 as NO WAY OUT.
