A woman poses as heir to the Russian throne. Stars Ingrid Bergman, Yul Brynner. Commentary feature on the real Anastasia.

Years after the last Russian czar and his entire family are murdered during the revolution, a former asylum patient, Anna (Ingrid Bergman), surfaces and might be Czar Nicholas's daughter, Anastasia. With only dim memories--and an uncanny resemblance to the lost princess--to guide her, she allows herself to be taken in by the ex-czarist military leader and con man Bounin (Yul Brynner) and be unveiled as the princess. Only a meeting with Anastasia's grandmother, the Dowager Empress who is still alive in Denmark, will reveal if Anastasia really is who she claims to be.

In 1917, Russian revolutionaries overthrew the last czar, Nicholas, imprisoning him and his family and executing them one year later. Shortly thereafter, rumors began to spread that one of the czar's daughters, Anastasia, was still alive. In 1928, a woman surfaced claiming to be Anastasia. Based on the play, and the fictionalized account of actual events, ANASTASIA tells the story of Anna (Ingrid Bergman), the impoverished, suicidal Russian woman living in Paris who believes she may be Anastasia. When ex-military leader General Bounin, deftly played by Yul Brynner, and his cohorts discover Anna, they convince her, through grueling training sessions, that she is, in fact, the real princess. Yet Anna's own unmistakable memories unnerve even the general who, upon finding her, believed she was only a fake. The climax of the film, in which the Dowager Empress (Helen Hayes), who is still alive, meets Anastasia, is poignant and riveting. Shot on location in Paris, director Anatole Litvak commands incomparable performances from Bergman, Hayes, and Brynner in this captivating tale of lost identity. Bergman won her second Oscar for her winning portrayal that introduces just the right regal note of doubt about her real heritage.

ANASTASIA was adapted from the play by Marcelle Maurette. Ingrid Bergman won the Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of Anna. There was, in fact, a woman named Anna Anderson, a former mental patient who, for over 60 years, claimed to be the Grand Duchess Anastasia Romanov. While there was circumstantial evidence to support her claims, which many supported, DNA testing in the mid-1990s matched her DNA against that of her would-be cousin, the British Prince of Wales, and proved she was indeed a fake. ANASTASIA marked the return of Bergman after her six year absence from Hollywood, where she was shunned over her scandalous affair with director Roberto Rossellini, with whom she had a daughter, the actress Isabella Rossellini. Natalie Schafer, who plays the exiled Russian aristocrat Lissenskaia, is best known for her role as Mrs. Howell on TV's GILLIGAN'S ISLAND, but she also starred in another Litvak film, THE SNAKE PIT, as Olivia de Havilland's mother. The film was remade in 1997 as a Fox's first animated feature.

Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) 4 stars

4 stars Great Movie - Poor Quality DVD
This is a great, classic film and one of my favorites in the historical "what-if?" genre. And it highlights one of the greatest mysteries of the 20th century. Was Anna Anderson the Grand Duchess Anastasia, or was she a fraud? And if indeed she was a fraud, how did she come to know so many intimate details about the private lives of the late Russian Imperial family - including state secrets that only came to light after her death? It is a mystery that - contrary to popular opinion - remains tantalizingly unsolved. Superb performances by Yul Brynner, Ingrid Bergman & Helen Hayes aside (plus a hauntingly romantic score by Alfred Newman), this particular DVD release has some problems. Poor sound quality in several scenes, renders the dialogue almost inaudible. A better version with proper sound control deserves to be made.

This World War II comedy stars Cary Grant in an uncharacteristic turn as Walter Eckland. Walter is an unshaven bum who inhabits a deserted island in the South Seas. Completely boozed up, unshaven, and badly dressed, Walter is a watcher for Japanese spy planes. An Australian Navy Commander, Frank Houghton (Trevor Howard) has pressed Walter, who once had his own cruiser at the beginning of the war, to become the sole occupant of a strategic watching station. It is into this world that smart and sexy Catherine Frenau (Leslie Caron) is drawn when Walter, en route in a dinghy to rescue another watcher, stumbles on to the schoolteacher and a flock of seven young girls. The girls have been marooned because their pilot was ordered to leave them to rescue the survivors of an abandoned bomber. Ralph Nelson directs shrewdly and keeps the comedy crisp as these eight survivors try to inhabit the same small island without driving each other crazy. The sharp witted Academy Award winning screenplay by Peter Stone and Frank Tarloff, is based on a story by S.H. Barnett. Closed Captioned; Standard Screen; Soundtrack English

George Stevens' classic Western, adaptated from the Jack Schaefer novel, stars Alan Ladd in the title role. Riding the ranges of Wyoming's Grand Tetons, Shane stops at the farm of homesteader Joe Starrett (Van Heflin) just before Ryker (Emile Meyer), a powerful and predatory cattleman, arrives with his hired muscle to make the farmer a threatening offer for land that he intends to get by any means necessary. When Shane lets the cattle baron know that his gun will back Starrett if there's any trouble, the grateful homesteader offers the stranger a job as a hired hand, which he accepts. Joe's young son Joey (Brandon de Wilde) is drawn to the quiet stranger, whose difference from the men he knows is confirmed by the accidental revelation of a gunfighter's lightning reflexes. Shane becomes a valuable asset to the farm, but is slowly drawn into the continuing hostilities between the two opposing groups. To complicate matters, Shane feels an unspoken, and unwanted, attraction to Starrett's wife Marian (Jean Arthur). This creates a sense of ambivalence in Joe, whose son already idolizes the gunslinger. Stevens' meticulous artistry imbues the simple Western with the mythic aura of an Arthurian legend, as Loyal Griggs' beautifully composed images provide the canvas for career performances by Ladd, Heflin, Arthur, and de Wilde, in what many regard as the finest western ever made. In Michael Curtiz's swashbuckling spectacle about the infamous outlaw and his band of merry men who "robbed from the rich and gave to the poor," Robin Hood (Errol Flynn) fights nobly for justice against the evil Sir Guy of Gisbourne (Basil Rathbone) while striving to win the hand of the beautiful Maid Marian (Olivia de Havilland). Flynn joyously embraces the role widely considered the best of his bountiful array of swashbuckling legends. Delivering his lines and performing dashing acrobatics (he did most of his own stunts) with breezy élan, he darts across the intricate sets of THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD as if there are rocket boosters secreted in his tights. It was one of the earliest films to use three-color Technicolor and, at the time, the most expensive film Warner Bros. had produced. Erich Wolfgang Korngold's outstanding score won an Oscar, as did the art direction and the editing. The boozing, smoking, cussing captain of a tramp steamer, Charlie Allnut, saves prim and proper Rose Sayer after her brother is killed by German soldiers at the beginning of World War I in Africa. Many quarrels later, the two set sail on the Ulonga-Bora in order to sabotage a German ship. Based on the 1935 novel by C.S. Forester, the wonderful combination of Hepburn and Bogie (who won an Oscar) makes this a thoroughly enjoyable blend of comedy and adventure. Later came the book (and Clint Eastwood film) White Hunter, Black Heart, which chronicled Peter Viertel's experiences observing Huston throughout the making of the picture. Haughty and volatile, a Pullman porter's fiery disposition loses him his job and lands him in jail. While on the chain gang, he kills a white guard and escapes, retreating to Haiti where he overthrows the monarch and crowns himself Emperor Jones.
