Well done drama based on the life of missionary Gladys Aylward who led a group of children through perilous 1930's China. Robert Donat gives a particularly fine performance as a Mandarin in this, his final film. Based on "The Small Woman" by Alan Burgess. Academy Award Nominations: Best Director. Filmed in Cinemascope.

I enjoy watching inspiring, true stories of people who have overcome hardships. It's great for children to watch also.

This is a big 1950's style Hollywood movie that tells the "true" story of Gladys Aylward, a Christian missionary to China in the 1930's. There is a love story that's not part of her biography but the movie does get the gist of her remarkable story across. I couldn't believe that this movie actually shows one of the main characters converted to Christianity! Good, clean, adventurous story for the whole family.
