RULES OF TRAVEL was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album.
Rosanne Cash started out at the vanguard of progressive country in the late '70s, but although you can't have deeper roots in country music than Johnny Cash's eldest child, she always had a broader vision in mind. Her definitive farewell to country came with 1993's THE WHEEL and she hasn't looked back since. Only one more album popped out in the 10 years between that career milestone and RULES OF TRAVEL, but it sounds like it was time well spent.
With country ever further behind her, Cash goes down a deep, dark, introspective singer/songwriter path via dusky songs simmering with hurt, regret, and hard lessons learned. Cash's artful-but-not-pretentious lyrics are expertly framed by husband/producer/multi-instrumentalist John Leventhal, who plays the lion's share of the instruments and leads his wife toward a sonic state not dissimilar to that of his cohort Shawn Colvin (a crisp folk/rock/pop amalgam). Guest appearances by the likes of Steve Earle and Big Daddy Cash himself make for some variety, but it's Ms. Cash's trenchant, concise songwriting that's the star of this show.

Rosanne Cash Rules Of Travel Songs Rules Of Travel Music Review Average Rating: (4.2 out of 5 stars) Not as good as Black Cadillac I expected more from this CD, the songs are short, the lyrics are hard to understand at times, and it only has 11 songs on it, one short my personal rule of 12. It is good, just not as good as I thought. September when it comes is of course, beyond compare, and the first cut "Beautiful Pain" has some wonderful lyrics. I would buy it again it would make a good gift to introduce someone to this genre of music Submitted by tattoobaby58 (Farmington NM) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A strong return from one of the best It seems like we've been waiting for ages for this release, and sometimes you thought it would never happen. But it finally got here and it has been worth waiting for. At the first spin you might not think so, but this album grows on you. Cash does not possess a big voice, but she uses what she's got to full effect. Her songwriting is strong and husband John Leventhal has done the production work and most of the playing. If there's one thing lacking this time around, it's the arrangements and instrumentation of each song. Leventhal is a great guitarist, but several of the songs are low-key with sparse arrangements, which probably enhances the lyrics. But Rosanne Cash's songs are well-suited for high energy and a strong beat, no matter whether it's country, country-rock, folk-rock or whatever she feels like performing. There's a duet with a father - of course - as well as duets with Sheryl Crow, Steve Earle and Teddy Thompson. Apart from Johnny Cash's vocal contribution, I don't think the other artists add anything to the songs. Let's hope Rosanne Cash will keep that in mind, when she makes her next record! Still Rules I like Rosanne Cash. This isn't my new favorite of her, but this is an excellent disc with some great new music. Absolutely not disappointing, if you like Rosanne Cash, you should not overlook this release. Submitted by a reviewer (Fairfax VA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Rosanne is back in full force Forget Faith, Martina, and Shania. This is the best that country pop has to offer. It's great having Rosanne back. A true country songstress. Submitted by a reviewer (Enid,Oklahoma U.S.A.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
