| | Grateful Dead Birth Of The Dead CD Grateful Dead Discography of CDs
(4 Customer Reviews)
For those who don't wish to bust their budgets on the 12-CD box set that this double-CD release originated from, BIRTH OF THE DEAD is an illuminating glimpse of the Grateful Dead's first steps, including demos and live tracks, which finds the collective emerging from its jug band beginnings into a vibrant folk rock outfit. They perform a rocked-up version of the ancient jug band song "Stealin'," and there's a rarity in "Fire in the City," featuring jazz singer Jon Hendricks, which was originally recorded for an anti-Vietnam War documentary. The second disc's live set includes a wealth of blues and folk covers, including Dylan's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" and the mournful "In the Pines," all played with the nervous energy of a band that's unsure of just what thrills and terrors lurk around the corner.
This two-disc collection assembles rare pre-Warner tracks recorded in 1965-66 for the Autumn (6 cuts, 4 previously unreleased) & Scorpio (8 cuts, 6 previously unreleased) labels. Also included are "Fire in the City," an ultra-rare collaboration with Jon Hendricks on Disc 1, & 15 previously unreleased live tracks from various Bay Area venues on Disc 2 (recorded by Bear). 'Birth of the Dead' was compiled by longtime Dead PR chief Dennis McNally & Lou Tambakos. The songs were digitally remastered in HDCD & the set features a 16-page booklet & is packaged in double gatefold Digipak. Rhino. 2003.

| | Sarah McLachlan Bloom CD (2005) (Import) Remix Album; Bonus Track; Japan
Birth Of The Dead music CDs
$30.55 This 11-track release by Sarah Mclachlan includes "World On Fire" and "Ice."
No stranger to remixes, Canadian singer/songwriter Sarah McLachlan has had her atmospheric pop/rock compositions reworked since her 1989 debut, TOUCH. BLOOM is, in fact, the second McLachlan collection devoted entirely to reinterpretations of her songs, and it draws primarily from 2003's AFTERGLOW for source material.
Here Junkie XL (renowned for his raucous take on Elvis Presley's "A Little Less Conversation") adds an ominous tone to "World on Fire," and Thievery Corporation gives "Dirty Little Secret" a minimal backing of shuffling beats and entrancing ambient textures. While some treatments work better than others, every track on BLOOM manages to offer something that makes it notably different from its original, with the only constant being McLachlan's emotive and immediately distinctive voice. Most charmingly, reggae legends Sly & Robbie transform "Train Wreck" into a spare, shuffling R&B number, and Talvin Singh works traditional Indian instrumentation into "Answer," showing that the possibilities for reworking McLachlan's spacious tunes are nearly endless.
Bloom begins with Junkie ...
