CCR seemed like something of an anomaly on their 1968 debut. They were miles from the mind-expanding flower-power explorations of their California contemporaries. They came across as a gritty, hard-hitting band respectful of their blues, country, and rock & roll roots. John Fogerty's cutting, raspy voice bore echoes of Howlin' Wolf and Little Richard as he delivered lyrics that alternately celebrated and bemoaned a working man's life, much like Merle Haggard and other '60s country artists. That the strong New Orleans swamp-rock flavor seemed so natural (Californian Fogerty's bayou tales were pure flights of fancy) was a testament to the strength of CCR's musical vision. The way they put a respectful but contemporary twist on Dale Hawkins's "Suzie Q" and the chilling "I Put a Spell on You" shows that they knew enough about the past to step confidently into rock & roll's future.
Includes liner notes by Ben Fong-Torres.

| | Songs Ohia Magnolia Electric Co. CD (2003)
Creedence Clearwater Revival (1st LP) songs
$12.29 From the very beginning, there was always a certain blue-collar quality to Jason Molina's songs, a working-class element informing his lyrics. But nowhere is it more visible than on Magnolia Electric Co., the seventh Songs: Ohia album. The assured, denim-clad, '70s rock feel of the album positions it on the dark edge of town, in the neighborhood of Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, and Bob Seger. But these are no bombastic anthems like the songs of those populist rousers. Molina remains subjective and confessional in tone even when singing, "Someone must have set 'em up/Now they'll be working in the cold gray rock/Now they'll be working in the hot mill steam/Now they'll be working in the concrete," as he does on the incredible seven-plus minute opener, "Farewell Transmission." The song also serves as possibly the first real recorded display on a proper full-length album of what the Songs: ...
| | Hall Of Mirrors CDs (2005)
Creedence Clearwater Revival (1st LP) album
$13.89 Some time in the making, Hall of Mirrors is the latest of the many compilations that have emerged over the past decade or so that try to make comprehensive sense of the ever-broadening world of 20th-into-21st century psych/freak/drone rock. Overseen by Mason Jones, whose own band SubArachnoid Space takes a bow on the second disc with "S. F. Eagle," it covers several years, a number of different continents, and approaches ranging from the extreme mind-melting to the calmer -- but with an emphasis on the former. There's no manifesto to the disc beyond a mention from Jones to share 'the quality of the music,' and it's no idle description -- from the start, with a marvelous example of Kinski's extreme motorik style via "Teen Center," Hall of Mirrors aims for a high mark and generally meets it. As a potential introduction to a wide number of bands for unfamiliar listeners, it rivals the legendary Tokyo Invasion, Vol. 1: Cosmic Kurushi Monsters compilation of the mid-'90s, and indeed unsurprisingly, many of the high points come from Japanese bands, whose impact on these styles has only increased with time. Besides the almost inevitable Acid Mothers Temple, with ...
