Standard Screen; Soundtrack French; English Subtitles; Dolby Digital 5.1 Re This acclaimed film presents the epic 16th-century saga of Margot de Valois (Isabelle Adjani) and her tragic arranged marriage to Henri of Navarre (Daniel Auteuil). In order to create an alliance between the Protestants and the Catholics, Margot is betrothed to Henri, one of the leaders of the French Protestants. Margot, despite her initial hostility, eventually becomes Henri's main ally in a convoluted and conspiratorial court. However, determined not to consummate her relationship with Henri, Margot takes a Protestant lover (Vincent Perez) and during the St. Bartholomew's Night Massacre, in which the Catholics slaughter the Protestants, helps him escape. The events that follow change not only Margot's life but the course of French history. Rated BBFC 18 by the British Board of Film Certification.
One episode of D.W. Griffith's famed epic "Intolerance" (1916) also covers the St. Bartholomew's massacre, but from a different perspective -- that of the victims. Queen Margot Movie Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) Kinky sex and religious war Good period piece about the infamous St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre believed to have been orchestrated by Catherine de Medici. Lisa Virni gives a good performance as Catherine and Isabella Adjani is outstanding in the lead role. Although a long film, the action and intrigue moves it along; only the corny love story bogs it down in places. Submitted by tintin84105 (Woods Cross, UT, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Epic drama This is a historical drama of epic proportions directed by actor Patrice Chereau, whom you might remember in Michael Mann's adaptation of "The Last of the Mohican's" playing general Marquis de Montcalm. "Queen Margot" is based on the book of the same name by Alexandre Dumas and it works splendidly throughout! The love story unfolds amidst the royal wedding festivities in Paris, August 1572, when the Massacre of St. Batholomew took place. The royal family and the city of Paris are torn between different religious beliefs, as Catholics and Protestants clashes with one another. A moving and horrifying film with outstanding performances by Isabelle Adjani, Daniel Auteuil, Jean-Hugues Anglade - and Virna Lisi as Catherine of Medici (the Queen Mother) who masterminded the infamous massacre - and many others. A motion picture for history buffs that's for sure, but this movie deserves a broader audience. Because when material as this is placed in the right hands, it shows that a movie about power politics and religious beliefs can turn out to be wonderful entertainment and enlightning at the same time. Buy this stunning movie immediately. You won't regret it. Submitted by sm.and (Hvidovre, Denmark) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A Brilliant epic / drama ! A fine example of fine french cinema making. Mesmerising performences by Daniel Auteuil, Isabelle Adjani, Pascal Greggory. Jean-Hughes Anglade was terrefic as the king. This is a film, beautifully cinematographed, the score is lovely and gives you the 16th century feel. The film has sexuality, violence, incesteous desires, enligtning moments, nevertheless a beautifull and lively film! Worth a watch... you cant afford to miss this film if you like French History or just good drama! Submitted by Ben (Scotland) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
