The 30th-anniversary edition of this best-of compilation from the New Wave group Split Enz has been digitally remastered.
This compendium of the New Zealand band's best material includes Neil Finn's "I Got You" which went to number 12 in the UK when it came out in 1980. Neil would later go on to form Crowded House, while his brother Tim would release several solo albums and join Neil on his band's album WOODFACE in 1991.
This collection is Beatles-influenced New Wave--the keyboard and all its sonic capabilities was somewhat de rigueur for many bands in the early '80s, and is heavily featured here. Besides the aforementioned "I Got You," other great tunes include "Six Months in a Leaky Boat," the simple, anger-motivated "I See Red" and the sweetly romantic "Message to My Girl." Much as with early Beatles, these songs are simple, direct, short, and uncomplicated.
2002 reissue of the Kiwi indie icon's 1987 compilation, released to commemorate their 30th anniversary, includes six bonus tracks, 'I Hope I Never', 'Message To My Girl', 'Strait Old Line', 'Late Last Night', 'Give It A Whirl', & 'Charlie'. 17 hit singles in all. Slipcase. Mushroom.Q (10/95, p.147) - 3 Stars - Good - "...when Neil Finn got drafted in to join his brother Tim in 1977...in came a far purer sense of pop..." Best Of Split Enz album
$9.89 Expectations run supremely high for a group like The Good, The Bad & The Queen. In addition to being Damon Albarn's first project since the Gorillaz, the GB&Q are also quite the super group, with Clash bassist Paul Simonon, Verve guitarist Simon Tong, and legendary drummer Tony Allen--the man who put the beat in Afrobeat--rounding out the line-up. Adding to this stellar cast is producer/DJ Danger Mouse, who mans the boards and twists the knobs.
The group's 2007 self-titled debut is supremely well-crafted, featuring deeply layered electronic textures that recall the Gorillaz at their most atmospheric and warp the propulsive piano and guitar lines in a playfully foreboding manner. And while Allen doesn't exactly open up the way fans of his work with Fela Kuti might hope, he expertly anchors the whole affair, gently shifting the rhythms and pacing of the tracks without disrupting Albarn's expansive, slightly noir-ish new approach ...
| | Desperate Man Blues Discovering The Roots Desperate Man Blues: Discovering The Roots Of American Music CD (2006)
Best Of Split Enz CD music
$13.35 In conjunction with the 2006 DVD documentary of record collector Joe Bussard, Dust-to-Digital released this companion CD, featuring 19 tracks in some of the kind of styles -- rural blues, jazz, and old-timey country music, mostly from the '20s and '30s -- that Bussard loves. Desperate Man Blues: Discovering the Roots of American Music isn't exactly a soundtrack to the documentary, since these records are not featured in their entirety in that film. Rather, it's a survey of some of the highlights of the music in which Bussard specializes, the liner notes featuring track-by-track annotation by Bussard himself. It's an excellent mixture of classics by some of the most esteemed early country and blues giants and the kind of more obscure items that are primarily known only to the type of listeners who covet what Bussard collects. Among the classics are Robert Johnson's "Cross Road Blues," Blind Willie ...
