| | Beatles For Sale CD (1964)
Heroes Of Steel CD music
$15.65 It was inevitable that the constant grind of touring, writing, promoting, and recording would grate on the Beatles, but the weariness of Beatles for Sale comes as something of a shock. Only five months before, the group released the joyous A Hard Day's Night. Now, they sound beaten, worn, and, in Lennon's case, bitter and self-loathing. His opening trilogy ("No Reply," "I'm a Loser," "Baby's in Black") is the darkest sequence on any Beatles record, setting the tone for the album. Moments of joy pop up now and again, mainly in the forms of covers and the dynamic "Eight Days a Week," but the very presence of six covers after the triumphant all-original A Hard Day's Night feels like an admission of defeat or at least a regression. (It doesn't help that Lennon's cover of his beloved obscurity "Mr. Moonlight" winds ...
| | Avantasia Metal Opera CD (2001)
Heroes Of Steel music CDs
$10.35 An all-star aggregation similar in conception to Ayreon, Avantasia's The Metal Opera naturally spotlights its creator, Tobias Sammet, who wrote all the music and the involved fantasy storyline over the course of a year as a side project from his main gig with the German power metal band Edguy. Though Sammet's vocals play a major role, he recruited some of his power metal contemporaries to sing the parts of different characters in the story, tailoring his casting choices -- elves, dwarves, Druids, and other D&D-type mainstays -- to their vocal ranges. (Oddly, given the themes, there's a bit of a Christian undertone to the lyrics.) It's tempting to say that for a grandiose conceptual project like this, the scope of the ambition is more important (and entertaining) than the actual ...

| | Best Of John Coltrane CD (2004)
Heroes Of Steel album
$13.95 Though THE BEST OF JOHN COLTRANE is a rather misleading title (no single-disc collection could claim to represent the true range and grandeur of the saxophonist's career), this fine Prestige sampler does bring together highlights from the artist's sessions for the label in the late 1950s. Coltrane's Prestige albums were contemporaneous with his tenure in Miles Davis's stellar first quintet, and ...
| | Loudness Hurricane Eyes CD (1987)
Heroes Of Steel CD music
$9.69 Though it failed to equal the mostly novelty-based sales of Loudness' first internationally distributed album Thunder in the East, Lightning Strikes had handily managed to translate the band's Japanese-bred heavy metal into a more easily digestible recipe for Western audiences. Because this progress didn't translate into sales, however, their record company, Atco, felt the need to force the band's hand toward an even more pop-metal direction when it came time to record their next effort. Yet, while producer Max Norman's work on Lightning Strikes had merely served to trim the excess fat from Loudness' rather busy compositions, new hire Andy Johns would show no such restraint in his mission to completely ...

| | Black N Blue Rarities CD (2007)
Heroes Of Steel CD music
$13.15 Black 'N Blue were never a huge name in '80s hair metal; they never achieved the level of stardom that Poison, Mötley Crüe, Def Leppard, Warrant, or Bon Jovi achieved in their day. But the Los Angeles-based outfit (originally from Portland, OR) did have their hardcore followers, and those diehards are the obvious target of Rarities. This 43-minute CD is accurately titled because it is, in fact, a collection of rarities. Much of the disc is devoted to demos from 1982-1986, and diehard Black 'N Blue fans will enjoy hearing what "Wicked Bitch" and "Hold on to 18" sounded like before they were professionally produced and found their way to the band's self-titled debut album for Geffen ...
