The Stone Roses: Ian Brown, John Squire, Reni, Mani. Producers: John Leckie, Simon Dawson. Compilation producer: Silvertone Records. Includes liner notes by John McCready. Given the glut of Stone Roses compilations, it's easy to assume that there's already been a collection called The Very Best of the Stone Roses prior to this 2002 release, or at least one that does something similar to its career-spanning overview. No, this is the first disc to run from "Sally Cinnamon" to "Ten Storey Love Song," the first to sketch the band's great promise, glory days, and bewildering downfall. Though there are album versions of songs instead of singles on occasion on this collection, there's nothing rare and nothing that any Stone Roses fan doesn't already have. Nor does it shine as brightly as their debut. That said, the song selection can't be faulted, and the non-chronological sequencing proves that the Roses' lambasted second album did, in fact, have several excellent moments (all of which can be found here) that fit well next to the best of the debut. For that reason, it may be worthwhile for the hardcore, but this is truly for those that want all the singles on one, nicely packaged disc. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine A career-spanning retrospective, THE VERY BEST OF THE STONE ROSES includes the UK band's earliest singles ("Sally Cinnamon," "Elephant Stone") and the most revered tunes from their canonized 1989 eponymous debut ("She Bangs the Drums," "Fool's Gold," etc.). The collection also features a '90 single ("One Love") and the best tracks from their oft-maligned sophomore album, SECOND COMING ("Love Spreads," "Ten Storey Love Song"). Generally considered the progenitors of Manchester's late-'80s/early-'90s rock-meets-acid-house scene (AKA the "Madchester scene"), the Stone Roses blended swirling guitars, dancey beats, and chimey '60s-influenced pop hooks with thick washes of reverb and distortion. Serving as a definitive singles collection, this aptly titled compilation presents the very best of the results--an eminently groovy mix that recalls British Invasion-era songcraft while simultaneously commanding the body to move. Personnel: Joni Mitchell (guitar); Seal (vocals); Greg Leisz (guitar); Michael Landau (electric guitar); Wayne Shorter (soprano saxophone); Larry Klein (organ); Jim Keltner, Carlos Vega (drums). Recording information: Kiva. Joni Mitchell returned to the relatively spare style of albums like Hejira and her early folk collections on Turbulent Indigo, emphasizing her acoustic guitar strumming and singing on a series of songs that detail the political and social discontent she had previously explored on Dog Eat Dog and Chalk Mark in a Rain Storm. In the brief opener, "Sunny Sunday," a woman tries to shoot out a streetlight with a pistol and misses every night, a metaphor for the individual's futile struggle against civilization, and Mitchell repeats much the same message in songs like "Sex Kills," a generalized criticism of everything from lawyers to the hole in the ozone layer; "Turbulent Indigo," which describes the inability of people to understand artists; "Last Chance Lost," which treats romantic disappointment; and "Not to Blame," about spousal abuse. The low-key music and restrained vocals stand in ...
