One of the longest running ensembles in modern jazz, the String Trio of New York has been in the biz for over 25 years. This release marks violinist Rob Thomas' first recording with the band. Captured live at New York City's Jazz Standard venue, this production features jazz trumpeter Dave Douglas' multi-part piece dedicated to the late pianist Jaki Byard, titled "In So Many Worlds." Otherwise, acoustic guitarist James Emery and double bassist John Lindberg share the remaining compositional credits. This group just about does it all. The trio swings hard sans a drummer, while also integrating odd tunings and avant free-form dialogues into this undeniably divergent track mix. Best of all, the group's improvisational abilities loom rather large here. Thomas' soaring gestures often complement Emery's ringing harmonics and Lindberg's fat-toned lines. Essentially, the musicians interrogate a variegated musical plane, awash with sudden deviations from the norm, intermixed with chamber-like qualities and cyclical passages. There are some sanguine moments amid the artists' complexly woven soundscapes and suspenseful modes of execution, as the players' synergy and wide-ranging scope of musicality stand as their trademarks. Hence, another superb effort by this time-honored outfit. ~ Glenn Astarita

The Wire (5/03, p.71) - "...Their immaculate precision in rendering treacherously difficult themes and their dazzling virtuosity as improvisers have, arguably, more edge than has been the case for years..." JazzTimes (6/03, pp.136-8) - "...Rob Thomas steals the show. He is a violinist of exceptional creative resources. He more than holds his own with split-second decisions in blistering collective improvisations..." String Trio Of New York Gut Reaction Songs Gut Reaction Review

Gut Reaction songs
$13.59 Recorded in 1971, Tears of Joy is a Don Ellis classic. The sheer musical strength of this ensemble is pretty much unparalleled in his career. The trumpeter/leader had backed off -- a bit -- from some of his outlandish and beautifully excessive use of strange and unconventional time signatures, though there is no lack of pioneering experimentalism in tone, color, arrangement, or style. This double LP/CD features a string quartet, a brass octet (four trumpets, tuba, bass trombone, trombone, and French horn), four winds, and a rhythm section boasting two drummers, a percussionist, a bassist, and the Bulgarian jazz piano wizard Milcho Leviev. This is a sprawling album. Disc one ...

| | Best Of Count Basie CD (1980)
Gut Reaction CD music
$9.65 Derived from sessions recorded in the early '80s, THE BEST OF COUNT BASIE presents the leader in his usual, 17-piece big-band setting. Staying true to the concept of swing he developed in the late '30s and early '40s, Basie performs seven rousing numbers that highlight the talents of Roy Eldridge (trumpet), Al Grey (trombone), and Milt Jackson (vibes), among others. Basie himself maintains his compact, stride-like piano style.
Soloing has never been Basie's prime objective. When he does step forward, though, he artfully paces his lines with silence and sparse rhythms. We hear this best on "Tree Frog," where the pianist engages in call-and-response between himself and the trumpets, trombones, and saxophones. A live rendition of "Billie's Bounce" is of particular interest. Basie was never a fan of bebop, and his version of this Charlie Parker classic brings out the "down home" quality of the late saxophonist's tune. Structured around a twelve-bar blues form, this bebop anthem serves as a vehicle for the distinctly ...
