The Fugees: Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, Prakazrel "Pras". Producers include: Wyclef Jean, Lauryn Hill, John Forte, Shawn King, Salaam Remi. Personnel: Steady Rider (vocals); Diamond D (rap vocals); John Forté (drum programming); Laurence Hill (background vocals). Audio Mixers: Diamond D; Warren Riker; Wyclef Jean. Recording information: Booga Basement Studios, South Orange, NJ; The Crib, New York, NY; The TracKen Place, Los Angeles, CA. Photographer: Marc Baptiste. As wonderful and compelling as the Fugees were during their brief moment in the sun (circa 1996), it's difficult to make the case for a Fugees Greatest Hits. The trio only put out two records, the first a muddled attempt at weed-soaked hardcore, the second an excellent fusion of hip-hop and soul, so the obvious choice for record-buyers is that final full-length, The Score. This compilation includes seven tracks from The Score, prefacing it with two selections from the 1994 debut (Blunted on Reality) and tacking on Lauryn Hill's first solo recording, "The Sweetest Thing" -- originally on the Love Jones soundtrack and later included on her first album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Anyone interested in hearing what the Fugees sounded like before The Score is subjected to Blunted on Reality's pair of substandard singles ("Vocab," "Nappy Heads"), though wiser compilers would've chosen early songs that paved the way for The Score, like the graceful Hill feature "Some Seek Stardom." Brief and perfunctory, Greatest Hits is, basically, a budget compilation with a more artful cover. ~ John Bush As wonderful and compelling as the Fugees were during their brief moment in the sun (circa 1996), it's difficult to make the case for a Fugees Greatest Hits. Greatest Hits
$10.75 Personnel: Alyssa Park, John Wittenberg, Ruth Bruegger, Michelle Richards, Julian Hallmark, Natalie Leggett, Armen Garabedian, Josephina Vergara, Charlie Bisharat, Tereza Stanislav (violin); Carole Castillo, Brian Dembow, Roland Kato, Darrin McCann (viola); Suzie Katayama, Larry Corbett, Steve Richards (cello); Victor Indrizzo (drums). Audio Mixer: Serban Ghenea. Recording information: Decoy Studio; Henson Recording Studios, Hollywood, CA; Jsm Studios, New York, NY; The Treehouse, Studio City, CA. ALIENS & RAINBOWS, the first album from singer-songwriter Ferras, brims with sprightly pop hooks and lush, elaborate production. Ferras's piano-driven tunes borrow from the Beatles, Elton John, and adult contemporary of the AMERICAN IDOL variety, and as such the music is incredibly catchy, layered, and fun to listen to. "Liberation Day," the aching ballad "Rush," and the sweeping title track are among the highlights on this promising debut. Singer/songwriter Ferras has a remarkable ability to bait a hook, producers the Matrix and Gary Clark have a marvelous way with crescendos, and together they've created a fabulous pop album of astounding depth and beauty. The first fruits of their collaboration were introduced to the nation when Ferras' achingly lovely "Hollywood's Not America" played off the chaff on American Idol. Even so, it was the simple, breathtaking beauty of "Take My Lips" that won the singer a contract with Capitol Records. Accompanying himself on piano, Ferras performed the emotive, romantic ...
